Brees Gives Endorsement to Austin Carr (1 Viewer)

You don’t win games with potential. Carr obviously is doing it all across the board. I think he makes the roster and plays/produces more this season.

Very true however those guys were money on 3rd down. I mean if you absolutely had to have a crucial play to keep the chains moving or 1st down, those were your guys.

I didn't see it all from Carr in 2018. Not a hater but he just hasn't produced in New Orleans.

I think Carr is smart and has great hands, but is easy to upgrade. Will he make the team? I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Correct, but you also don't win games on lack of potential along with lack of production.

Carr has done essentially nothing as a Saint and we heard this same kind of praise last offseason.

Why is it we can't seem to get both size and speed in one package? Both Humphrey and Butler have the size, but not speed. I guess maybe because players with that combination are generally drafted.
The funny thing is Carr has neither exceptional speed nor size. I think Payton and Brees' fondness for him is more about his knowing the playbook, always lining up in the right place, running crisp routes, having good locker room presence, exhibiting strong character and work ethic. Will those intangibles be enough for him to make the team, especially at a time when we urgently need to upgrade the overall position group?

To be fair, this is year 3 for Carr, and we're talking about deep depth at WR which is more where we keep our core special teamers.

Not saying I would rather Carr than another of our young receivers, but I could easily see that happening. Behind Smith on the roster, there's a list of WRs without much separating them. None have NFL production, none are freak height/weight/speed athletes, and we have no draft, trade, or cap capital invested in any of them.

Of those, Carr has the most NFL experience and 2 years in our offense. Cobbs and Kirkwood have 1 year in the NFL and in our offense, with Kirkwood having 1/2 year's worth of #4WR reps. Grayson has a couple years of bouncing around the league on practice squads.

So the question is... what is most important to our coaches? Experience? Special teams value? A specific role? Upside? Carr checks 3 of those boxes. And who knows. There may be some upside we fans don't see. He may blossom like Vonn Bell did last year or T-Rex seems to be doing this year.

"Experience" and "value" means very little if it's not translating on Sundays with production.

I just don't see it. Has he been tearing it up in practice or something? I think there are several WRs with much more potential we should be keeping over Carr.
Have you actually been to practice?

Devil's advocate here, but... I'm not sure coaches feel we needed to urgently upgrade the overall position group (WR).
I mean they knew we had to add another weapon in the passing game, and did so by adding Jared Cook. Very possible
they're satisfied with that move alone. If they weren't, the wouldn't they have used a draft pick or brought in another
quality vet? Biggest splurge was Rashad Mathews, and it didn't seem like he was better than the young receivers we
have.

Now from a fan's perspective... we only have ONE wide receiver on the team worth drafting in most fantasy football formats.
Never mind that we have likely THE top WR, THE top RB, and one of the top TEs.

Yeah! How the heck would Brees know?

If what Brees and Payton said was gospel, Adrian Arrington would be headed to the HOF about now.

I'm curious if Carr has really taken it to another level in practice or if this is just more platitudes from guys known for platitudes.
