3 reasons Teddy Bridgewater isn’t the answer - Roy Anderson @ Who Dat Dish nails it (2 Viewers)

Disagreed. The whole game is played for entertainment sake. It’s not as if we are talking about one guy leading us to 15-1, while the more entertaining guy goes 8-8. If we are going to be 8-8 either way l take the guy who’re more fun to watch all day.

So winning with boring players isn't entertaining now? LoL tell that to Spurs fans

This offense is built around Brees and his strengths. The gameplan was set when Bridgewater came in, and at that point it really can’t be changed. Payton knows what Bridgewater can do well, and I’m sure this week has been tweaking the heck out of the offense to fit Bridgewater’s strengths better.

Or at least that’s what I hope

Honestly, I'm kind of worried just because I've seen it happen far too many times in the NFL and Payton is not a rash coach. He's the type that will keep someone a year too long than get rid of someone a year too soon. I don't mind giving Bridgewater a chance. I just do not want to end up in a cycle of mediocrity that so many other teams have fallen into because they are scared to make the switch.

He does do this or he has in the past but if we are 1-2 when Teddy comes to New Orleans to play Dallas and plays horribly there, he will be booed out of the building. I'm not saying it's right but it will happen and then Payton will make the change b/c he and the New Orleans brass would hate the look of it. Payton is a guy who likes to be known as a smart coach and staying w/ a losing hand for too long isn't his style, especially after the three 7-9 seasons and he kept going to Greenbriar, ugh. I do believe he's learned from that.

The fact is that Bridgewater has been through five off seasons in the NFL, three pre-injury and two post. Brees has gone through two at that time.

My discouragement doesn’t come from Bridgewater struggling. It’s how he struggles, I.e. the weird throwing motion, the lack of pocket presence, the inability to anticipate throws, the bad body language, etc. These are not things that a QB with five off seasons under his belt should still be struggling with if he’s setting up to turn a corner.

But I get it. Anything is possible. Bridgewater could be suffering from a lack of confidence after that horrific injury and maybe he shakes that off.

I need to see him produce soon though. Not that I matter, but my personal conviction is that he’s not someone we should give an entire half a season too if he doesn’t perform well.

I think you guys are both making good points. I really want to see Teddy go out and ball. I live in South Florida now and I’ve followed his career for awhile.

With that said, he hasn’t been good this season. He showed some promise in the first preseason game, but it feels like each subsequent outing has been worse.

But here’s why I think we could see a new TB this week: Payton, perhaps more than any other coach, believes in drawing up, game-planning and calling plays his QB is comfortable with. It’s why you hear him say all the time “do you love it?” Peter King gave some good detail on that when the Saints let him inside their game prep for last year’s Eagles game.

So we haven’t seen Teddy, the Saints starting QB yet. We haven’t seen him with all the starters, with a full game plan to attack for four quarters and with spending all week on plays he “loves.” Hopefully that changes a lot and we see the QB that Payton pushed so hard to bring back.

It’s now or never.

"Whatever people think of Bridgewater’s NFL body of work so far, Hill’s, at QB, is much more vague but no more reassuring. "

No more reassuring? I think that's crazy talk---Hill's upside is a lot more apparent. Sure, they will draft a hotshot QB to be waiting in the wings, but Taysom will be tough to beat.

Payton's hestation w/ Taysom are two fold I believe. One, he does so much for us in other areas that are important to utilize on the team. Two, his arm. Now in preseason, he showed his arm is there but that was against backups. Could he do it against the ones? Well, we don't know but we do know Payton didn't have him w/ the ones. That could be telling, Taysom isn't Payton's type of QB? He likes the guy but as a swiss army knife/utility man which is so needed on the team and the Steve Young reference was more about his strength and speed not his QB skills.

Also, let me just say we also know Payton knows QBs, Brees (GOAT), Romo (scouted him), Mahommes (scouted him/wanted to draft him), that's why it's strange Teddy isn't playing well. I think it's strange for Payton too, so strange he's gonna fight tooth and nail to make it work.

put too much mustard on his passes and had to explain that term to a younger watcher.
Get off my lawn, already!!!

So, in the next few weeks, the one thing, the only thing that TB has to do is not lose games. And by that I don't mean he has to win them all, just not be the reason why the game is lost, if you know what I mean.

A quick look at what Seattle has done so far, this game looks to be winnable, again, as long as it is a close game and the Saints don't fall too far behind. And I am sure Payton will have some scripted plays early not to make TB look good, but for the offense to be effective in moving the ball. I think it is safe to say, we can expect the Hawks to dare TB to beat them with his arm, so establishing a running game will be extremely important.

As for being "the answer", well, TB is "the answer" for this Sunday, and most likely for the next few Sundays after that, unless he's downright terrible (and even so, we all know how Payton rolls), but I still think this game is manageable. The next game, on prime time against the Cowboys, that's the one I feel will be the real tell tale. But that is as far as backup is concerned, because I don't believe TB is the QB to be given the reins of the offense as full time starter once Drew retires.

The gameday board is going to be especially entertaining. I think Andrus should charge admission this Sunday :hihi: There are going to be a lot of reactions and so-called "hot takes" after the game, win or lose.

Bad article and bad timing. With the article, the first point is invalid because the o-line did not play well the entire game. Drew got hurt because we couldn't block Donald. The pressure continued throughout the game and led to several holding calls, negative plays and no true rhythm on offense. The coach noted it, but maybe Roy knows more about football than Payton. The second point is a bit contrary because he dismisses Teddy's success in the league in favor of who? Taysom? Who has no success in the league as a starting QB. I would rather go with experience in this situation. The last point is really simple. Drew is one of the greatest to ever do it. No one can honestly believe that Teddy will do the same as Drew when there are less than a dozen QBs in the history of the game that actually can. Players need to adjust to Teddy's skillset like they would have to adjust to Taysom's. In short, every point made could be argued for our next best option. Lastly, the timing of the article is bad too. We haven't had one relevant game where Teddy started, but this guy couldn't wait to write this divisive piece. We really should be rallying behind Teddy to hold it down until our leader makes it back or at least until he truly proves he's not the answer.

As a QB, that isn’t certain. I like the potential, but in terms of confidence in either QB right now, I don’t see it. If people are intrigued by Hill’s athleticism, I get that and agree.

As much as I'm questioning Teddy at this point, people are ignoring that Hill has a 0% chance of staying healthy playing the way he does. He wouldn't last six games. All those plays people love where he runs over a LB would have to go away if he becomes the starter.

Do you even believe any of that? QBs get sacked and hit all the time. Its a contact sport and Brees has been healthy for a long, long time. Donald is a top 5 all time DL. The O line had an off game. It happens.

Teddys 'success' was 1 year where he played overly cautious and had a HoF running back keeping defenses honest. And even then his stats were pedestrian. This idea that Teddy has all this success is misguided at best.

I know Taysom doesnt have experience. But the guy plays with fire, he is a playmaker. He will likely throw an inteception here and there, but Id rather a guy who is willing to take a chance than whatever the hell it is Bridgewater does.

The argument that the ball is being thrown too hard is not even a good excuse in high school football. These are NFL players who have earned their place by catching quite a lot of fastballs to get where they are. No excuse for those drops last Sunday (I'm looking at you, Jared).

Can we give Teddy a few weekends before the rash judgements? There have been quite a few backup QB hero stories throughout NFL history where guys didn't look so hot before tearing it up - Jim Plunkett comes to mind, among others.

So, in the next few weeks, the one thing, the only thing that TB has to do is not lose games.

The Saints defense isn’t good enough for whoever is QB to play to not lose. If the Saints don’t want to go 0-6 until Brees returns, the QB is going to have to actively make plays. The running game doesn’t get 50 yards without the threat of the pass and the defense isn’t going to shut anyone down without the offense sustaining drives.
