“Close, close.”

That’s how New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees responded when Zach Strief, Voice of the Saints, asked how close he is to returning from injury.

“I’m going to practice this week, and I’m going to see how it feels,” Brees went on. “I’m tired of just throwing on air. I need some action. I need some competition.”

The Saints are 5-0 without the future Hall-of-Famer, but Brees is itching to get back as soon as he can.

“There’s a lot that goes into it,” Brees explained. “It’s different than just picking up a baseball and throwing a baseball or shooting a basketball. This is gripping a football and being able to throw it while someone’s hitting you and throwing it 50 yards and put it in a spot where nobody else can get it.

“I’m going to see how it responds, and we’ll go from there,” Brees said. “But, man, I’m hoping that it’ll be good to go this week.”

Brees also broke down the Saints big 36-25 win over the Chicago Bears.

Good interview with Brees by Strief. Looks like he'll be playing if things go well in practice this week.

Exactly. If he's healthy and can do the things required of a starting QB then he should- and will- play. I'm so tired of people wanting him to keep sitting. This is the NFL. There are no guaranteed wins and the difference between a 3-3 team and a 5-1 team is razor thin. If he's medically cleared then he needs to play.

Agree completely.

The only reason to continue to sit him is if he is still limited to the point Teddy gives you a better chance to win. I’m sure that’s how Payton will approach it, too.

I was so glad when this article popped up in my email. We finally hear it from the horse's mouth that he'll be playing this Sunday if everything goes well in practice. No more speculation about sitting him until after the bye and all that nonsense. He's also the same guy who wrote in his book about never letting your backup see the field, so you know it's been killing him watching Teddy play while he's been out, even though you know he couldn't be happier for both Teddy and the results the team has produced in his absence.

Honestly, I'd just rather let TB finish out the first half of the season and then Drew gets 2 weeks to prep for Atlanta and make the most of our second half. I'm ok either way, but I don't think there's any extra pressure to get Drew out there unless he's fully 100%.

Their was a comment by Payton that was reported during the game yesterday that may have been missed by some people. Everyone is talking about Brees returning this week as though he will be starting and that does not appear to be the plan.

According to the report from Payton, Brees would be available and that would allow Taysom to play a bigger role in the offense. So Bridgewater would start and Brees would be available if TB was injured.

I heard it. I just don't believe him. Why would he go and tip his hand that Drew will be playing this week when he doesn't have to? Let AZ game plan for what we've installed for Teddy and put Brees out there. I also think their sideline reporter could have misunderstood what he was saying. Hill can play just as many more snaps with TB as the backup as he could with Drew sitting on the sideline in uniform.

Brees himself says he hopes everything goes well this week and they'll take it from there. I don't think it makes any sense to leave you FHOF QB on the sidelines if there's no chance of further injuring himself and he is fully capable of being himself.

I think he's ready to get out there and take some hits sooner rather than later. At some point, you lose that edge and sitting another 3 weeks might do more harm than good.

Yeah, I considered that. I mean, he's already been out a while. He'll have to sort of start and stop again with the bye week anyway. I'm not sure how much difference it will make. We'll see I guess.

I don't think Drew would want to play unless he's 100%. He doesn't want to go out there and not be able to run the offense and I don't think he'd be cleared to play unless he's 100%. He's right on schedule with his rehab. It's not like he's trying to come back early.

What would happen to the collective boards head if Brees came back and the Saints lose a game? Not enough duct tape! But seriously I like Teddy but he has left so many points on the field by not recognizing who’s open and such

Honest question. What constitutes being medically cleared to play? Does a player need to be at 90%, 95%, etc? I'd think it's nearly impossible, when a player is in the latter part of the healing process, to put an actual, definitive number on it. Part of it would obviously come down to how the player feels and how comfortable a team might be in taking a slight risk. To me, an extra 2 weeks of practice and conditioning could mean a lot in the long run, and by long run, I mean 2nd half of the season and the playoffs. With our record, we have the luxury of playing it safe if we choose. If Brees feels he's near 100% by the end of this week, I don't know why you wouldn't hand it back over to him, but if he feels he isn't quite there, an extra 2 weeks of practice and preparation seem like the smart move. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Brees is in a truly unique scenario where he has been injured, his back up reels off 5 straight wins, yet doesn't get close to being wally pipped.
