Hardrock Hotel (new construction) colapses in French Quarter. (1 Viewer)

Interesting that Hard Rock would pay for the demo costs when they previously stated ( thru their attorneys ) they dont own this project.

They fronted the money for the developer so it could get done. I assume that they expect to be paid back once insurance money comes in.

couldnt really tell if he was half joking but he said " it will be a parking lot" amid the conversation of demo and with what the plans could be after demo.

Def no development by Hard Rock ( says Cantrelle doesnt want after this ), and speculated that Citadel/Kailas will probably be hard pressed to do any future work in the City limits.

How exactly would they go about razing the entire building. Those are some tight quarters surrounded by already existing development.

Certainly no room to dynamite it or wrecking ball. Piece by piece dismantle?

UNO professor of civil engineering Dr. Norma Jean Mattei was on WWL radio this morning with Tommy Tucker. Tucker asked her this exact question. She offered the opinion that a controlled implosion would be fairly standard in the Hard Rock Hotel's situation.

Are you saying you don't put blind faith into engineers' competence every day? Specifically what do you not agree with?

I put zero blind faith into engineers' competence every day.

However, I do apply an appropriate amount of confidence in institutions, processes, professionals, etc. based on the preponderance of evidence.

they will do that with the remaining crane ( piece by piece )

Not sure. ITs such a mess down there, between State, City , Engineers etc etc. They have never had to tackle something like this before. Crazy.

Well i guess that doesnt absolve them from a liability standpoint. I figured that first statement was to get out in front of any/all litigation, but if they indeed "fronted" the money, they could be deemed an "owner".

not sure.

The developers, Kailas Co, just had an owner spend 30 months in prison for grafting public funds. ( apparently once he was found guilty, the company went to one of his brothers? )

sheesh.

Thats who Hard Rock chose to lead this project???

I'd imagine they'd need to at least erect border walls to contain all the rubble sure to spill out everywhere. Then all the plumes of dust and smoke will surely damage the surrounded area. Even that explosion for the cranes alone blew out some windows in the hotel across the street.

It's a mess.

Father, I think.

They only fronted the money for the crane demo and I am sure it was to get it done in a timely manner. They are not the owners of the project.

So they took DAYS to clear the site, and somehow, a truck gets left parked right in front to get smashed? Some one wanted out of a note.

Over/under for when streets around the site are fully re-opened?

Is one year an insane estimate?

I wonder if they also left the dog in the dog crate in the back of the bed? New Orleans sure knows how to show themselves in a bad way. This whole building crane things is kinda like Katrina with everyone wanting input from the state, the mayor, and no telling how many government engineers.

Will be interested to see all the finger pointing when they start litigating this through the courts. Any bets on how much corruption gets exposed at city hall before it all over? I don't think they engineer new building in a way that one failure can take out the a whole side so not only are they going to need to know where the original failure was but why a redundant structure failed as well. Kinda looks like that points to the structural engineering and who ever approved the structural engineering.

From looking at the pictures of the building, it appears the collapsed area was cantilevered which would make sense why each floor broke off at the same place as the pancaked on each other. Was that a failure waiting to happen when it was occupied by guest/residents?

Just because the building collapsed, it doesn't mean there was corruption or that it was an inadequate structural design. Being that it occurred during construction, any number of things could have happened. One critical failure could have easily caused that cascade failure of the floors because of the often unstable nature of construction. What caused that critical failure and how it happened is what will be ver closely investigated. We really need to wait for the investigation to know more. In the mean time, just stay clear of the conspiracy theories.
