The Hard Truth About Drew (1 Viewer)

Brees in Decline is still a Top 5 QB. He is still ELITE in dissecting/reading a Defense and able to go thru his progressions like a high speed micro processor. Sure we know his deep ball is sputtering....it’s been for years now.

He still has what it takes to win a Super Bowl ! Look at Peyton Manning his last SuperBowl run with theBroncos. Brees is nowhere near that far gone as Manning was. Brees still has it.

look at Aaron Rogers for crying out loud. He’s got a Cannon of an arm still but spraying inaccuracies all over the field at times.

Did Drew do Drew, or what yesterday, on the last drive? In that situation, Drew will still execute a winning drive like that, 9 out of 10 times. I am good with Drew. What else do you Drew disbelievers want?

The guy lays it on the field every game. And he certainly is not going to do something, that will cause a personal foul, or unsportsmanlike penalty to be called.

Get over it! Drew is still THE MAN!

As the biggest Brees fan on the planet, I'm seeing for the first time that decline we've been talking about.

If we get any negative play during a series of downs, we are almost guaranteed to get to 4th down. Brees gets sacked, series is over. Offensive holding, series is over. It's sad to see, but it's happening.

That being said, we saw the very best of Drew and his intellect. He's the smartest QB to ever play the game.

But yeah we can't get the ball down field anymore.

Which is why Michael Thomas has to be declared the best receiver in football, knowing our offensive pass plays are very limited.

28-35 228 yards, 3 TDs, 0 Ints will win you a Super Bowl however. All is not lost. Let's keep the faith.

Yesterday actually shocked me. I personally had written off Brees' arm. I didn't think we would see him connect on another pass over 25 yards ever again.

Then he goes and hits Ginn in stride in which the ball was in the air for almost 40 yards. Of course Ginn dropped it. He also had so much zip on the ball that he over shot Cook (who climbed a ladder to catch it). Then he darted a bullet in the endzone to Cook (dropped it).

Of course he still had 2 passes where the ball fell short by a yard at least. I'm beginning to wonder if it's not just all arm strength but field of vision and judgment on passes. At 40 your field decreases. I wonder if he's just misjudging the distance on some of his throws. Because one minute he's one hopping a WR and the next he's putting the ball down the field and either over throwing or Ginn is dropping it.

Why do folks get so upset when Drew is criticized?

Well I think that he’s been the best player we’ve ever had, is perhaps the biggest reason why we won a championship, and just seems like a really great guy and has been a good ambassador for the team and city.

Fair or not, I think that buys a guy a long leash.

And while I won’t argue that some posters can be a bit sensitive or defensive when it comes to Brees, I also think there has been way too much complaining (that has also gone on for far too long) about his arm strength.

There are more than a few media people and posters on this board who have been beating the arm strength drum for about 5-6 years, some even getting very “doom and gloom” about it.

So I’m not going to say you’re wrong that Brees can be a sensitive topic for some, but I will admit that there are a lot of Brees rants (most, but not all about arm strength) that just kind of make me roll my eyes. And I think that is often (although not always) a justifiable reaction, especially with some of the complaints and forecasts of doom which go back several years.

I just want to thank the OP for a great laugh! I needed it. Thanks man!

When you think of Saints what is the first thing that comes to mind? It should be Drew. The perennial Saint champion that is and will be the greatest Saints player of all time. So when people talk ill about him for sometimes justifiable reasons such as Drew in decline which I think there is some but it's not cliff drop off and it's focused on a little too much, it's just age it catches up to us all but what he is still doing is amazing. People get upset and sometimes rightfully so when the criticism is unwarranted.

Why do folks get so upset when Drew is criticized?

Because it’s always something different from the peanut gallery. It started with his contract, then his arm strength, then his bible video, then his lack of game management skills like Teddy, then his declining pocket awareness. You see where I’m going with this? We get it, the guy is at the end of his career. He is going to decline, and that’s ok!

I guess the annoying part is, for me at least, it goes beyond criticism and turns into outright blame for some of the posters on this site. You can go into any game day thread and see what I am talking about. I’ll never understand why there is an underlying resentment for the guy. I’m not saying he is beyond criticism, but he should be beyond direct blame for a teams struggles

My only response is, look at the game winning drive. Took a sack on the first play. Still marched the team down the field with no timeouts and set up the winning field goal.
Declining arm strength, missing both starters on the left side of the OL, no #2 WR, declinIng pocket presence, whatever.
All I know is that Brees gets it done when the game is on the line.

For sure. We will see how it goes the rest of the year. But at last he attempted the throws today. I can't remember him taking this many shots downfield in the last 2.5 years.

Every game is televised, locally at least. Check it out if you live in the area.

Why do folks get so upset when Drew is criticized?
I don't know if it's necessarily being upset with criticism of Drew as much as it is exasperation with the criticisms being inaccurate and often unfounded.

For example, the interception on the attempt to Tre'Quan Smith was a poor decision and an even worse throw. Brees shouldn't have thrown if for those two reasons, plus the fact that he had a different target that was by NFL standards wide open that he missed. Payton grabbed him on the sideline and gave him a bit of an earful over it, with reason. That would be a pretty clear thing to criticize him over.

But what it usually ends up being is some uneducated screed that purports to be a clear sign the the cracks in the foundation of his game are showing and proof that the end of his elite playing status is here. And games like yesterday show that his arm is just fine, and he's still one of the better quarterbacks in the league.

His career is going to end much sooner than we as a fanbase will be ready for. And he's metaphorically in the old folks' home part of his football life, but this constant rush to be the first one to throw dirt on his grave instead of visiting him and checking his chart is a real drain on those of us who really just want to enjoy the show while it's still on.

This. I have to admit that I'm struggling with this current stage and not knowing what will come next. Drew is not immune to things that have been said about other QBs when they reach 35+. People say the same things about Rogers, Rivers, and Brady. Except in the case of Brady he goes out and wins another ring. In our case, it's been 10 years since our peak; that worries me.
