It sounds like the focus of today’s meeting was the fact they have just made so many mistakes.

On one hand, it’s a blessing because a) it’s correctable and b) were 10-2.

On the other hand, as he said, time is running out and they have to fix it ASAP.

In addition to the things Coach Payton mentions, I hope he is also self-scouting on how he has/has not utilized the running game, particularly Murray. SF's biggest defensive weakness is runs between the tackles. To have a chance in this game, we have to pound it inside. Otherwise, I am afraid Drew will get sacked too many times, which not only ruins drives but can result in turnovers. Against a team like this, winning the turnover battle is a must.

I hate to say it, but this team looked better when Bridgewater was the starting QB. No, I don’t think that Bridgewater is better than Brees, but it just feels like everyone put their best foot forward. It also seems like we had a ton of less penalties as a team when he was the starter.

Agree with everything. I think the penalties were a bit closer because it took a while for the O to get used to Bridgewater’s cadence and rhythm. But there’s no doubt everyone raised their game when Drew was our and we haven’t played as well as a team since.

Bridgewater had a healthy OL. If Armstead and Peat come back healthy, that changes a lot.

I don't even think that's it. The drops is what has killed us and I can't say it enough. You can't leave 30 points on the field over 2 games and expect to blow teams out. We make the catches we should make and nobody is talking about these issues. The one blessing that may have come from the drops in the Falcons game is we were close enough that Atlanta was trying onside kicks and it presented a problem that we now have a chance to fix before it has a chance to be a back breaker in the playoffs.

With Bridgewater at QB, the Saints‘ coaches and CSP almost felt like they were “forced” to rely on the run game, the short pass game, the defense, and special teams.
Once Drew came back, they were almost like, “OK, Brees is back... relax.”

Nothing new here. He has been saying, after every game...."LOOK, THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT WE NEED TO GET CLEANED UP AND WE WILL". When? This week? What about the past 6 or so weeks? If and when things do get cleaned up (IE; the stupid play calling at times, like an empty back set, on 4th and 1. Or the DUMB penalties, by a certain high profile player of this team.) Or the special teams play? I am going to believe it when I see it. Until then, just win even if your team cannot get things CLEANED UP.

Shouldn’t it have been fixed after the Chicago game 8 weeks ago when they recovered 2 themselves (one was reversed because the Bear player was out of bounds)?

I have referred to it in the past as the 'Brees Effect.'

When Brees has been out - in games that matter - the rest of the team ups its game. Whether that means the defense is playing more disciplined or Special Team players are staying on their blocks longer, the team performs better on the defensive and special team units. When Brees is back they get lazy and their actions reflect, "We have one of the greatest QBs in the game, he will bail us out."

Offensively, the coach is forced to stick to a game plan. It was a great forcing function. Gone are some of the ingenious plays that Coach created now that Brees is back. Some are still there now that Hill is allowed to play the Swiss Army knife role again but that one option play between Line and the RB was beautiful to get a key first down.

Yes, I understand you call the game differently but simply having Brees back does not mean you get sloppy with play calling, particularly when there have been struggles from Brees in hitting the shot plays consistently or dropped passes or pre-snap penalties.

All that being said, if the Saints can cut out the dumb penalties the dropped passes and inconsistent execution is something many of us are willing to live with as long as the team continues to win; however, the penalties are extremely frustrating as they hamper momentum, kill drives, and negate defensive take aways.
