How do I fix this cat? (3 Viewers)

? Awesome.

Some ideas: One of our old feral cats started staying close and now on the porch. We figured out she lost her hearing. Also, did your ex's cats live at your current house? Dude may pick up those scents and is acting accordingly.

It's possible. I cleaned all of the carpet when they left but I'm sure that I didn't get everything 100%.

He's almost adjusted. There is litter box evidence that he has been in the basement. He uses both boxes upstairs. No mistakes in days.

He played for about 2 minutes last night. He was able to let himself forget for a moment but I could see it dawn on him that things are different now and he stopped.

He's still clingy. He still sits on a folded up blanket on my recliner and doesn't move unless he wants attention, food, or to use a box.

He's becoming more cat like though.20191223_222021.jpg

He’s an awesome cat! And lucky to have you.

Need to remember too that a 13 yr old cat isn't going to play around like a kitten most likely. Our 9 yr old will chase a string and things like that on occasion but most of the time just sleeps. A laser pointer on the floor used to make that thing lose its mind though.

It looks like my cat, who is 14 yrs. old, been having since a kitten and pretty much has the same behavior as yours. He is not tolerate to strangers, but knows immediate family and still would rather lay back and watch things going on. Kind of like Mayhem on the Allstate commercial, a billion years of tiger DNA observing your every move, just waiting to pounce.

I haven't had any other people around so I don't know how he will be with strangers but I was a stranger and he loved me. Maybe he was smart enough to realize that he needed to be nice to get out of the joint.

Nah bruh. Don't you think that. Cats learn their owners. They are timid for a day or so and do odd things to get a feel of who you are.

Thanos was timid for two days. It's been downhill every since. It's either I give him attention when he wants it (with his main obsession, the twist-tie) or homeboy attempts to make his way towards the collection.

Cats are evil demon spawns from the bowels of hell who are out to destroy mankind since the day we stopped worshipping them in Egypt. We just can't see it because they're oh so cute at doing it.

Now excuse me. My master beckons...

Tuesday morning I dropped off a bunch of soft cat, and dog, food at the local humane society (Meowschwitz).

I'm too busy for a dog. It's common for me to be gone for 24-36 hours at a time. I don't have anything against cats so I asked to see what they have.

They had cats in general population and they had some in solitary confinement. I went to the solitary cats and asked to see their most difficult to adopt out.

They opened the cage of an estimated, 13 year old cat. They said that they won't adopt him out to anybody with kids, or other pets, and that he's slow to warm up to people. He liked me so I had them box him up. They had named him Emerald. That's a stripper's name so I changed it to (The Big) Lemeowski, or "Dude."

I got him home and set up a litter box in the basement and some food and water. We spent an hour with him crawling on me and then I headed to work and meetings. I got home 23 hours later.

I found 3 pooh piles in the dining room and nothing in the litter box. I haven't been successful finding urine. He had to pee right?

I got him a water fountain and set that up in the kitchen and put the food in the dining room.

Then I got another litter box and put that in one of my bathrooms. We went to sleep with no incidents. I left for another meeting and got home about 5 hours later. 5 more pooh piles but urine in the upstairs litter box.

When I was checking the basement box he stood at the top of the stairs and yelled at me. I went back upstairs and we ate. I went back downstairs for laundry and he stood at the top of the stairs and he yelled at me the whole time. Maybe he's afraid of the basement?

I brought that box upstairs. We'll see. I'm tired of cleaning the floor. He's an awesome cat and he deserves better than dying in Meowschwitz so I'm not going to take him back but I need to fix this.

Any suggestions?

Someone probably already suggested this, but find out what type of litter they were using at the shelter, and try to use the same kind, at least until he's used to your place.

They gave me a bag that was in the initial box. I have 3 boxes now. He's doing better. He uses the boxes when I'm home, and most of the time when I'm not. He seems to have problems when I'm not home.

my cat hated everyone but me. hated my kid hated my girl.... when he passed young I cried and held his paw when they put him to sleep. I loved that mean, ornery, hateful furball… he kind of changed my view of nature and animal psychology... Once your cat decides to shun the box its usually a huge uphill battle. I wish you luck and don't give up!

FYI, those automatic litter boxes are well worth the cost.
