I think the saints have peaked on the defense under Allen. This average defense that can hold their own against bad-average QBs but will suffer against any above average QB is the max we will get.

With that said, with good protection and a lot of weapons for Drew (like, 3 or 4 new legit receiving options), even without having a deep ball, this offense's potential under SP is of infinite magnitude.

It would be great to invest heavy on offense and defense, but the reality is the saints don't have enough capital to do so. Instead of splitting the capital they have on offense and defense, in my opinion, the best way to improve the team is to spend almost everything they have on the offense.

I think we need the deep ball back before worrying about another receiver. What’s the point of having four receiving options if were limiting the field of play to the short or intermediate routes? I think the deep part of the field is our highest priority of the offense this offseason to keep defenses from clogging the rest of the field.

I don't know. With Drew there won't be a consistent deep game anymore. But if we have one more possession receiver and two or three YAC guys, I don't think the deep ball will matter as much, specially with good protection and running game.

This plus adding to our Oline will help no matter who the QB is. Both our guards could be upgraded. Peat has to be replaced. Warford is on a contract that's inline with his skills so unless we replace him with a rookie I'd say keep him.
Whoever we get need to bring an attitude to the Oline. Someone with nastiness

I am not into that "nastiness" mentality but I do agree we need to upgrade the oline. The line was really inconsistent this year and it shows on games that we lost. When Drew has pressure up in the middle, it took away so much of what the offense can do. I wouldn't be mad if we take a guard in the first round if we planning to keep Drew.

Quentin Nelson and Taylor Lewayn are the best 2 examples of how "nastiness" can affect the entire Oline. I'm not talking Ndamukong suh, whose a dirty player IMO. Just a nasty, ready to battle demeanor

Yes with Drew a deep threat is pointless. A good YAC guy would do wonders tho.

Oh yeah like Sean Payton is such a HUGE advocate of running the ball!!

If the Saints go all in on offense (as per your suggestion) then it makes them even more one dimensional and very predictable and easier to defend!!

You can have all the receiving threats in the world but if you can't stretch the field then what good does it do? I love Brees as much as anyone but the ficticious regression that all the media has been talking about for the last 5 years has all of a sudden become a reality.

The Saints have been a deep strike team for a lot of years but the size of the field that teams have to defend against the Saints has gotten smaller and smaller the last couple of seasons because the deep threat doesn't scare anyone anymore so yes the deep ball DOES matter in keeping defenses honest.

What is it about that that all you WR guys don't see??

We should be upgrading the lines every year. Even though we have above average units on both sides of the ball (arguably top 5 O-line), when injuries happen or a particular unit is on the field too long, things break down. We have enough talent everywhere else (yes, including WR) that if the O-line and pass rush are on point, everything else will work. This has been true since the beginning of the sport. We have plenty of toys on offense. We don't have a mobile QB that mitigates iffy line play, but we have one of the best of all time in navigating a pocket. We have a lot of talent in the secondary. Our 2 interior Davenport and rankings going down is ultimately what killed us. Outside of lineman, a speedy LB would be a help too.

I’ve posted this several times, so I’ll also post it here too:

When Shanahan got to SF, the first thing he said was to build and around a Super Bowl D-line. They currently have four players on that D-line with double digit sacks (or damn near it). They’re now with an Elite defense due to that d-line.

We have 1 player (who is also getting older) in double digits and a bunch on high motor/rotational/with a lot of energy players who are not good enough to create pressure like you wish... And 2 starters on the Dline that haven’t proven they can play a full 16 anymore until proven otherwise. That also applies to the LB position with AA and Kiko as well. We NEED to build around the D-line and be able to create more pressure on opposing QBs without having to blitz or send extra players to make up for the lack of pass rush. We also need a MLB.

On offense, all we need is a WR #2 and a LG. We’re set on offense after that.
