N/S Cowboys player Drew Pearson emotional from getting snubbed by HOF (1 Viewer)

Gut wrenching.

I hope those voters give him his honor before he's gone. IMO he's Hall of Fame worthy. I wonder if Harold Carmichael (his teams were not quite as good) had played in Dallas and Drew in Philly would he be in by now?

Until the Hall has somewhat of benchmarks for different positions and coaches put in place, there will always be problems with the process.

Some guys get in the hall before others because of stats, media perception, career achievements, playoff success, etc. Its really all over the place.

The late Cliff Branch is no doubt shaking his head over this one in heaven as we speak.

When Swann and Stallworth are in the HOF and he isn't we have a confirmation bias problem.

There are lots of All-Decade players not in the Hall of Fame in fact of the 20 options almost all of them were on the All-Decade Team.

I like Drew but I would have taken Al Wistert or Beattie Feathers or Lavern Dilweg or Cecil Isabell or Bill Osmanski or Bucko Kilroy or Dick Barwegen or Dick Anderson or even Tommy Nobis over Drew.

Also not getting in from All-Decade Teams:
Ox Emmerson
Roger Craig

Also Jerrel Wilson is on two All-Decade teams and not in.

Around this time of year, when all the HOF debates start, I always argue about how The NFL and the HOF voters have no method to their selection madness.

I argue that Lynn Swann does not deserve to be in the HOF and that the only reason he is in the HOF is because of NFL Films.
Those slo-mo, acrobatic catches in the Super Bowls are why he was voted in --with overall good but not great stats.

Swann had 336 catches for 5,462 yds and 51 TDs in a 9 season career.
That's an average of 37 catches for 606 yds and 5 TDs a season. I don't care the era --- that's not HOF numbers. The Steelers won 4 Super Bowls on the backs of an all-universe defense. Swann was good but not great.

Sadly, I think you can say the same for Drew Pearson.

Pearson had 489 catches for 7,822 yds and 48 TDs in 11 seasons.
However, only 1 Super Bowl -- and no fancy slo-mo highlights set to orchestral music and John Facenda -- so he doesn't qualify for the Swann treatment with the HOF.

Don't forget Gertie Hornswaggle or Bort Shattenpuff!

Seriously, were those the names in the 70's? :hihi:

Met this guy when I worked at a country club. He wasn’t very friendly. Kind of a jerk. Maybe because I’m not a Boys fan and wasn’t fawning all over him like everyone else.

I prefer the way they do it even though you get subjective entries in classes from a long time ago, but that starts to settle itself out in the years with only 5 inductees and lots of possibilities.

Swann was also a broadcaster for a long time coupled with his personality I am sure he garnered some extra votes.

I think the real basis should be can you tell the story of the NFL without mentioning him. I think Drew Pearson is some close but maybe just a Hall of Extremely Good.

Complete side note but have you ever heard of Al Blozis (1940 All-Decade Team) .

He was drafted in 1942. Dominated for 2 years but only played in 42, 43, and 3 games in 44 before his career ended.

Apparently he had been petitioning the USM to join the armed forces but was denied due to his height ( too tall at 6-6). He finally got in late in1943 and was allowed furlough to play in NFL games in 44.

He was stationed at a desk job (2nd lt) but petitioned several times to go to the front. Eventually in JAN 45 he went to France. Two of his men went on a scout mission and did not return. He went looking for them and was later pronounced MIA/KIA.

Also should add...

look at Colston's career stats and look at Drew Pearson and Swann's stats. I get that it's not exactly comparable eras, but again, neither Pearson or Swann's stats are HOF-worthy.

Colston: 711 catches, 9759 yds and 72 TDs in a 10 season career. 1 Super Bowl
Swann (HOF): 336 catches for 5,462 yds and 51 TDs in a 9 season career. 4 Super Bowls
Pearson: 489 catches for 7,822 yds and 48 TDs in 11 seasons. 1 Super Bowl

-- and Colston never even made a Pro Bowl.

To be fair Drew and Swann played in 14 game seasons (not 16) and Drew was in the Top 10 of receiving yards 5 times in his career, Swann 3 times in the top 10 ...Colston only once (8th).
