Should the Saints retool thier roster with the goal of reaching the Super Bowl or start the process of a rebuild (letting certain free agents walk/ trade others while keeping a couple of centerpieces.)

I mean shouldn't the goal every year is to reach the Super Bowl? The word "rebuilding" seems negative in a small way. I really thought the rebuilding process occur during the 2015 to 2016 season when we went 7-9 but had some decent draft picks to build on. Adding pieces to what we have now is the way to go.

Rebuild, no. Let a certain player go, yes.

As I watching playoffs today, it occurred to me that the Saints are back in the old mold of wasting their draft picks on players they don't retain or can't stay healthy. Rankins, Davenport, Anzalone, Hampton and Ellis on defense . Peat and Armstead on offense. The Saints have only retained 19 out of 33 draftees. This has led to the need to go with a ton of FA's which is more expensive especially for backups. I don't think the Saints allure with Joe Burrow should cause them to gut the team and give up a bucket full of draft choices to acquire him. I have complained about this before, but the Saints don't seem to be about player development especially on defense. Until the Saints start to build from within through the draft, they may compete but will not reach the SB.

Just keeping adding players through the draft and building around this nucleus, there is no "retooling" or "rebuilding" this team is as talented as any in the league and looking at the QB position and CB position we may be loosing some talented players and will be more than likely signing fringe players in FA and relying on the draft for depth and player development.

any qb would have won that game for the 49ers today. you could have put billy joe tolliver in there to complete 6 passes.

Too many free agents to resign all of them so some will be allowed to leave. At LEAST 1 of the 3 QB's won't return. I think either Apple or Jenkins is gone. If Jenkins wants to stay then an extension will be needed to lower his $11 mil cap hit next year otherwise he could be cut and Apple re-signed for cheaper. I just don't see both of them staying though.

OL and DL win games.
That's where I would like to see the Saints focus their draft/FA efforts. Our lines are average to above average, but that won't win in the post season.
SF dominated both sides of the line and that is what won the game(s) to put them in the SB.
We need two new guards and another strong LT on offense, and better depth on the interior DL.

Dump Dennis Allen, his defense folds too easily in critical situations. Take play calling responsibilities from Payton, far too many cute gadget plays and passes. We have 2 great RBs and barely run the ball. Find a #2 receiver to take some of the coverage off MT, or start Taysom at WR.

I agree about the line.

We got our butts kicked up front and got jettisoned from the playoffs because of it. That said, we’ve also let the WR position fall apart. The Saints became competitive again by nailing it in the draft.

Do whatever it takes to get a consistent pass rush, i.e., more speed at DE and LB.
Offseason mantra since 2011: “It’s the pass rush, stupid.”

Nice post, totally agreed. I don't get all this non-sensical rebuild talk, the team just went 13-4, not 4-13....we just need to continue to draft well, bolster the depth on the offensive and defensive lines and plug a few holes and I think we will be fine...

Rebuild....mortgage the future to get Burrow....get rid of or don't re-sign Brees....ah, the lunacy of the long cold offseason......
