Utah State quarterback Jordan Love has entered the 2020 NFL draft. This draft report breaks down his background, performance and where he goes from here.
The college football enigma that is Jordan Love has declared for the 2020 NFL Draft. A relative unknown before 2018, Love has skyrocketed up the quarterback draft boards in the weeks since his draft announcement. While 2019 might have been a tough year for Love and the Utah State Aggies, Love has put enough on film the past two seasons to make football insiders excited at the prospect of Love entering the NFL.

The way it was explained to me was that Love looked a lot like Patrick Mahomes coming out of college. A player from a medium-sized football program, with obvious talent, who could throw the ball vertically down the field like an elite quarterback, with great accuracy, but who had less than ideal technique.

Nobody wants to admit they were one of the many people who slept on Mahomes coming out into the 2017 draft. Now people are falling over themselves to label Love as the next messiah for one of the NFL’s quarterback-needy teams.

But is all this hype legit? Does Love really have what it takes to be an elite quarterback in the NFL? What was so special about his 2018 season? What happened in 2019? If he was so great, why didn’t his skills carry into the next year? How did he end up at Utah State to begin with? Could Love really play at the same level as Mahomes or is he more likely to play like Jameis Winston: a high-flying vertical passing quarterback, with fatal flaws in his ability to read coverages?

He is going to be a good quarterback in the league. He played well given the talent around him, so don’t read into what happened when USU played LSU (that was like an in his prime Mike Tyson fighting an old man). I think he is a 1st rounder, but if he slips into the 2nd, I wouldn’t be mad if we traded up to get him.

Good! The more the merrier! It will cause other good QB prospects to fall down the board where the Saints can get a shot at 1.

Love is the one I’ve been most intrigued by. Easily the best physical tools in the draft. Great 2018, subpar 2019 after his coach and top pass-catchers left.

If his 2018 and 2019 seasons had been flipped, he’d be a no-brainer top 5 pick. May still be.

His team was vastly outmatched by LSU (who hasn’t) but I thought he made some good plays when we played Utah State earlier.

Well from seeing him, it will take some times if the coaches have patient with him. He has the physical tool. But the mental part is something we don't know until he is drafted.

When I look at him, I see a project with all the tools and the confidence to make any throw. But he’s a project in my eyes. He still needs a lot of work in going through his progressions and his presnap reads were not very good at times this past season.

He’s a prospect who could really develop sitting behind Brees for a year or two.

If there’s one thing I like about him more than Fromm or Herbert is that he’s not afraid to make the tough throws. Good or bad, it’s a quality that pops when you watch him.

I wasn't too impressed in the games I saw him play. I don't see any Mahomes comparison other than a strong arm (and even then Mahomes' throws look stronger and he is able to be make them using more difficult body angles/contortions).

The "project" word would put the brakes on picking him in the first round. I look at him and I see a little better version of Garrett Grayson and I have to pass on him.

I agree that Love has all the tools to be special in the NFL. For me his evaluation in the interview process will dictate his draft position.
I watched just a couple of his games. I saw him sulking on the sidelines when things got tough. Another time he seemed to be in disagreement with his coaches.
That could be an inaccurate assessment on my part. Who knows.
Jourdan Love has been touted as a first round talent for a couple of years. Our SAINTS Staff needs to do their due diligence at the NFL Combine to find out if Love can handle the NFL game mentally.
Remember you can fix fundamentals and Technique.
But, "You Can't Fix Stupid !"
