Why do so many people think Joe Burrow will be great in the NFL? (1 Viewer)

ive never been one that thought him being great at the next level was a given. Maybe, maybe not.
Cutler is a horrible example though. He had a better arm but he never proved to have some of the intangibles that Joe has. He wasn’t a good teammate , leader nor did he apparently have the heart. If Joe Burrow doesn’t succeed it will look nothing like Cutler
It's not even intangibles- Cutler never had half the accuracy I've seen Burrow throw with.

I agree with your assessment, but I think the biggest question as to whether or not he becomes great depends on if he ends up with a great coach with a good team around him.

His strengths and weaknesses are a carbon copy of Chad Pennington’s coming out of Marshall. Super smart, insanely accurate, great leader, prototypical size, etc.

Pennington’s biggest problem was getting drafted by the Jets. He still broke records for completion percentage, almost won the MVP, but his coaches were morons and he took a beating out there. His career was way less than it should have been.

I hope that Burrow ends up in a good situation. Maybe Zac Taylor is the perfect coach for him, doubt it, but time will tell.
Pennington had the weakest arm I've seen in the NFL. He threw beachballs around the field but that also is a testament to his incredible accuracy. Burrow reminds me a lot more of Brady, even looks like him in the pocket.

scouting is not an exact science. And more importantly football success depends as much on chemistry as on an individual's tallent.

If Burrows finds the right Team he will probably excel. With the Bengals? Not so much. It is that aspect that gives Saints Fans more hope than the situation warrants.

I've seen too many times the next greatest qb of all time before he's taken his first NFL snap. Sam Bradford always comes to mind. He was touted as the next great one and never amounted to anything. For every 1 qb that has staying power and almost lives up to the hype there's 20 that don't. More often than not the QB's that do well aren't talked about all that much.

This is fun!

It is LSU for 90% of ya and that is fine.

He is a great prospect no doubt.

The thing I find great is everyone brings up maturity!

That is cuz he is old as heck for a guy getting drafted now a days.

Patrick mahomes was in the AFC championship game and had been in the NFL for two seasons when he was Joe's age.

So yes he should seem more mature than past draft QBs because the true great ones start quick and leave quick in the NCAA game. Joe could not find the field then when he does he was serviceable. The. This year he was all world.

I like the kid. I think he will have a solid NFL experience and won't flash out.

His NFL experience will be a lot like his LSU one. With a lot of help he could be great. If he is given what he was at LSU for the first go round he will be just like that.

No this isn't meant to be an anti Joe Burrow thread. I think he has done great at LSU and deserves to be a high 1st round pick. But why is everyone so sure he will light it up in the NFL? Yes, he played in a spread offense similar to the Saints but he also had great playmakers around him. Will he have that with the team that drafts him? And why do so many people think the Saints would mortgage everything to obtain Burrow? I just don't see it. I want Joe Burrow to succeed and would love if somehow he became a Saint. But not at the cost of destroying a team that just won 13 games.

He reminds me of Drew Brees but more athletic and bigger honestly....deadly accurate, leader, competitive. Hes got a chip on his shoulder in a good way.

I can't call it. On the positive side, he had one of the greatest seasons ever for a qb. On the negative side, it was just one year and he couldn't beat out guys at State (kinda like Hurt at Bama). The biggest challenge is that he'll be going to a bad team.

Its the physical skills combined with the intangibles. The man is cool as a cucumber. I don't think anything can rattle him. He has that drive to be great. He's the kind of man that you just say "I'm going to follow that guy no matter where he goes". That's the kind of person you want leading your team.

Because he just had the greatest season ever for a QB, and he did it in the SEC. Not in the Big 12, or Pac 12, or Mountain West, or MAC. In the SEC.

Now, that doesn't mean he will be great in the NFL, but I believe it answers the OP's question as to why people think he will be great.

SEC! SEC! SEC!

Sorry I couldn't help myself you sounded like one of those people.

Football is a mental game. Burrow has the toughness of Tom Brady and the determination of Drew Brees. That's pretty rare and never breaks.

He's a leader, his players play hard for him. Not as common as you may think.

He can hit tight windows deep, some pros can't.

He can hit receivers in stride, and understands the value of doing so.

Gym rat. Mature. Those are undervalued.

He knows instinctively when to throw a dart, a softball, or loft it. His receivers know what to expect. I've seen 10 year pros that haven't mastered that.

He is smart and agile in the pocket, a talent that's missing from many Pros.

He is always looking downfield and can go to his 2nd and 3rd receiver, or just someone who is coming open, while on the run.

He's 6'4 in college inches, so probably 6'3". So he checks that box.

Aside from that, I agree he's nothing special.

Given his age, I've seen some theorize that he is as good as he is going to get so his ceiling is not very high while his floor might be. Not sure I agree, but I have seen that idea thrown out there.

I think Bradford would have been great if he was more durable. Never amounted to anything? He was a deadly accurate passer, 1 of the most accurate I have ever seen. That should count for something.
