Saints fight to avoid disclosing emails in Catholic abuse crisis (MERGED) (3 Viewers)

They were advising on how to release the names of the priests who were guilty, not cover it up. What's despicable about that? Especially considering the Saints have come out and said that their advice was to release the names publicly and notify all the pertinent law enforcement agencies. This all happened in 2018. The names were released in the newspaper and the priests who aren't dead were defrocked and face charges.

As a fan, I don't want the Saints doing favours regarding how to best handle the PR of a matter such as this.

Doesn't have to be a joke. It could be a political or religious opinion. Point is, why don't you disclose your text and email records to the entire world? When you say something about anything - could be whether you prefer paper or plastic - it could be made into something polarizing. It's one thing when you say something publicly meant for public consumption, but quite another if we are speaking in private, via a means that is meant to remain private.

True, but the Church has lost the right to the benefit of the doubt in these cases. Frankly, if anyone in their offices is making jokes or something similar in emails about this, they deserve what they get.

This is such a cluster and a legit PR nightmare for all involved.

While I totally understand why Gayle would ask reps from her media-savvy billion dollar company to consult on a very delicate issue — I’m agitated at the ignorance at using Saints and NFL email addresses to do this.

The attorneys will use this association to try and develop a larger narrative that generates more pressure on the Diocese.

What Bensel and Benson did was in no way illegal — but by being careless and tying the Saints into this — it makes a huge and unsavory story that will create some insane negative press for a while.

It’s frustrating that they should have been cautious — simply due to the nature of this sensitive subject and they were anything but cautious

This is completely ridiculuos. Gayle Benson, nor the Saints, committed no crime; not only that, but as was pointed out earlier, the Archbishop whom the Benson's are friends with and were assisting had nothing to do with the crimes nor the cover-up -- all that happened decades before he became Archbishop. The crimes are as horrible as there is, but the outrage shouldn't be directed at those who are trying to fix the mess decades later. At least have the damn facts before you start popping off about "what the NFL needs to do".
I don't know I may have may have misread this situation and overreacted.

I hold out on judgment until, after the case.

Truth.

I grew up Catholic , was an altar boy, the whole deal.. I was one of the lucky ones; many friends of mine growing up, weren’t as lucky.. As a result, i wont set foot in a Catholic Church if i can help it; somehow i just have an issue with any organization that settles over a half a BILLION dollars in child abuse cases.. actually, let’s not tiptoe, and just call it what it is- Child Rape.... And i certainly dont want my favorite football team anywhere near this stuff, regardless of whether or not they happen to be called the ‘Saints.’

They should still remove any association with the Church after this.
On what grounds? The New Orleans Saints, as an entity, had zero involvement with anything unbecoming. People who own and/or work for the Saints advised a personal friend in an area they had expertise on. The Catholic Church has 300,000 churches across the world, and has existed since circa 33 A.D. Good thing the majority of Christians didn't "remove any association with the Church" after every Judas, or there wouldn't be a deposit of faith 2,000 years later.

Pedophilia is inexcusable in every circumstance, and I'd be tempted to take justice into my own hands if it every happened to anyone I love; that said, it's a societal problem and not exclusive to the Catholic Church. In fact, it occurs in far greater numbers outside the Catholic Church than inside. I'm not giving anybody a pass; I'm simply stating that all religious - Catholic Priests, Protestant Pastors, ___ Ministers - they all come from you and me; they don't grow on trees. We raise them, and if, as a society, we have a disordered sexuality that includes every perversion and deviation, then we can expect to find that in every occupation, even those we hold to higher standards.

I think we can all agree with that, just like I think we can all agree that anyone who tried to cover up pedophilia should be prosecuted to the full. But those aren't the people whom Saints owners/personnel were assisting. The very small percentage of scum who called themselves priests and bishops who committed these crimes will most likely have a very uncomfortable enternity - they earned it. But what they did will never ruin the Church Christ started. We've had terrible men in the highest positions try to ruin the church from within over the last two millinea and fail. Darkness can't overcome the light. I don't care for the Judas' we've had throughout the ages, but a Judas doesn't change what a Jesus did, nor the sacraments He gives in His Church, nor the truth's she adheres to and teaches.

If my parish priest was a total Judas, I'd probably attend mass elsewhere, but I'd also pray for him. Last thing I'd do would be to abandon my religion - terrible priests and administrators can't erase the deposit of faith, or make the truths of faith any less true; no matter how much they try to destruct, they can't stop God from giving His grace in the sacraments. I'm a proud Catholic, and a proud Saints fan, and if anyone associated with either does something as heinous and wrong as pedolphila and a cover-up, I believe they should be punished to the full, but those donkey's aren't going to make me stop loving and believing in my Church and my team.

You are an enabler of the Catholic Church.. unfortunately , people like yourself are a huge part of the problem, and the reason why theyve been able to get away with diddling kids for so long while shuffling priests aroud to different parishes.

Any organization that demands celibacy, and doesnt allow priests to marry, is BEGGING for pedophiles and other miscreants to join its ranks... Spare me the doctrine, and just look at how much lower the numbers for these types of atrocities are in some other religions.. Episcopalians, for instance, allow their priests to get married, and they allow women to become priests, as well as men.

Sorry you feel that way. I go see the God of the entire universe every day on my lunch break in an Adoration Chapel, and I get to consume Him at every mass I attend. Works for me. Hope what you are doing works for you.

Nah, that was kind of a hilariously bad post that seems to misunderstand both separation of church and state and how businesses function.

Ok, so if i understand what you’re saying- You are okay with officials for a football team - you know, who deal with passing, punting, running a ball, etc- you’re ok with them inserting themselves into religious legal matters..... And conversely, you’re ok with religious officials - who deal with, you know, matters of life and death, eternal damnation, etc- you’re fine with them involving themselves in matters of football? Because the post i quoted above was simply against those two things occurring.
