Controversial music takes (1 Viewer)

it probably would be better to say you don’t actually know anything about the Beastie Boys
I know enough about them to say I don’t like their music. I never have, I never will. As others say and I agree, music appreciation is purely subjective. I don’t think they belong in the poorly-named Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Great White Buffalo is a much better song than Stranglehold.

I think part of the issue with Rock n Roll is how broad it is. When I think of rock, I think of hard rock and heavy metal. But then there's soft rock and power ballads and the broader pop rock. I think I'd have more interest in a metal hall of fame than the current iteration of the RRHOF. Just a thought.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band were never more than a decent bar band. Certainly not deserving all of the accolades they have been given.

I was never that into metal (hardly at all really) but I have always liked hard rock . . . I'm sure the line between the two is often blurry. But I definitely used to enjoy Headbangers Ball on MTV. That was just a fun show to watch. So was Yo! MTV Raps.

Well, the Headbangers Ball is the sole reason I became a metal fan. :hihi: But yeah, both of those were pretty fun. Good times! FWIW, I've always enjoyed both hard rock and metal. Although I started out more hard rock, but later got into metal. I'm not much of a music snob though. I'll listen to pretty much any genre if I like the sound.

Aren't you somewhat hearing impaired? Is it from the metal? :hihi:

I'm still not sure where you are going.

A song that sucks from a band you like?

But this has always been controversial.

Especially because he never used Holly's last name, which was a killer.

John Lennon was a homophobe, anti-semite, and wife beater who espoused a philosophy he didn't actually believe in (or at least made zero effort to actually live up to) and a third grader could poke holes through and gets called a genius by Baby Boomers for it. He is literal garbage.

Whoa...way to one up me!

I think they are a very good band but don't think they deserve "Greatest Band Ever" label. I would rather listen to the Stones, the Who or Led Zeppelin before the Beatles. I'd even rank Rush ahead of the Beatles

The Beatles have more hit songs than all of them combined. And if we did a coaching tree of sorts, their contribution to musicianship and music (sounds I'm guessing you love now when you hear other bands do it) is pretty unrivaled by anyone outside of the blues and R&B sounds that gave birth to Rock and Roll. Plus, they get points for not just stealing music. They were all students of the artform, fans first, and acknowledged it.

It is impossible to overstate how wrong this post is, almost every single syllable of it... But just as a point of fact, so you know, i am not a Baby Boomer, not even close- i’m in fact a Gen Xer, i often refer to Lennon as a genius, and i’m far from the only one.. i even know some Millenials who feel the same.. His appeal is multigenerational.

I see what you did there.

I standby my original assessment even if it seems contradictory. The Beatles were great, Lennon was overrated. The forth Beatle but in reality, he just had the pomposity to convince many he was one or two. Disagree? Let's see these Beatle member rankings.

Other than Highway to Hell, AC/DC kinda sucks.

Too many of their songs sound the same.

That....was the idea. Mission accomplished, I'd say. As one critic put it, they managed to put out the exact same record seven times in a row and they all sold pretty well.

Interesting tidbit - on Friday I had the kids in the car and we listen to Kids Place Live, it's a Sirius radio channel with a primary target audience of about 4 to 12, I'd say.

Anyway, "Rock and Roll" by the Velvet Underground came on and I had quite a laugh thinking about that song, that band, it's history and how funny it is that in 2020, the kids channel plays Velvet Underground. There's no reason not to play that song, it's perfectly fine for kids. But it's just funny to me to think about the context.

I play the Velvets and Lou Reed in the car even if the kids are in it. If they're not old enough, they don't even listen, and if they are, I explain.

"Waiting for the Man" might be one of the best R&R songs ever written. I'm not the huge "Sweet Jane" fanatic that other Velvet/Reed fans are, I do think it's a fine song, but overrated myself.
