No, they didn't' mention Lal in either context, but i don't see where it mattered at all. Daj is completely different Lal. Lal was another android with a transfered copy of Data's matrix.

Daj, as far as know thus far, is a cyborg for lack of a better term (flesh and blood body, synthetic brain/nervous system) grown from a neuron of data's positrontic brain (or whatever techno-bable they are using).

Lal and Daj are apples and oranges, the existence of one has nothing to do with the existence of the other, particularly since it seems Data had nothing to do with Daj's creation.

Why do they need to mention her? We know who she was and that she existed. And if you are new the the universe.. then you don't even need to know she existed.

Not necessary. Alison Pill's character would already know this fact since Data was what they were striving to recreate.

If it was relevant to the story, yes, however, considering Lal hasn't been mentioned in any context since the only episode she appeared in, then no. The truth is the character of Lal was nothing more then a plot device to further the character of Data, and quickly discarded by the series.

IMO, B4 is exactly the same. Nothing more then a way to kill data and reset him to go on without any of that messy Kartra stuff.

The fact that some time in the last twenty years a "race" of synthetic life forms is the real story here, something that no one was able to do in any of the three main shows (TNG, DS9, STV).

Anyway, Rewatching it... Picard did mention Lal. He said, "Data always wanted a daughter". I knew he mentioned a daughter at some point, and that was as detailed as he needed to be. Anything more would have been wasting time.

This is why I had a question. People KNOW Data had a daughter. We also know that the daughter was Lall. By not mentioning her directly and having Picard's "He always wanted a daughter" line, it suggests she didn't exist and that these twins are his one attempt.

As far as the term "miscarriage", if any of the androids could be considered one, it's B4, yet he/it was mentioned in the show. Lall would be more like a SIDS baby (she was alive for a while and later died) and people DO talk about those.

To be fair, I could be overthinking all this. I tend to do that.

I don't see the issue in not mentioning Lall since that attempt failed.

The way I see it, the whole "he always wanted a daughter" line doesn't automatically dismiss Lal. In a way, it assumes that we know about Lal having existed, without specifically stating it. I suppose they could have written it something like, "He always wanted a daughter, but after the loss of Lal, I didn't think he'd ever try again." I guess I don't take as much issue with this as I do with the whole "activation" and wayyyyy overpowered abilities she has.

And yes, I watched the first episode for free on Youtube since CBS decided to stream it on there last night for a limited time. I still haven't decided if I'm going to pay for All Access and watch weekly or just wait til it's over and binge.

enjoyed episode 2. i'm glad they have gone the rout of a serialized story instead of a collection of stand alone episodes. the plot thickens.

I'm eventually going to research this. Maybe it change in canon via the books. But I thought they retired the rank of Commodore for the Rear Admiral rank. Did I miss something?

I have zero recollection of them removing any ranks in Star Fleet.
