I really believe that if we had scored a touchdown after the early Vikings turnover the whole game turns out differently

And that got me thinking how many single missed opportunities we’ve had in our heartbreaking playoff losses

Dan Arnold dropping a sure TD last year against the Rams

Pierre Thomas fumbling against the Niners (on the hit that knocked him out of the game) I think we were close to scoring if I remember right

Reggie Bush dropping a walk in touchdown against the 7-9 Seahawks that would have put us up 14-0

All these plays were early in the game (not sure when the Arnold drop was, I think it was early) so you can’t say any of them cost us the game

But I’ll always believe if we had scored a TD we win all of them

I agree 100 percent.

Stalled drives, no matter where they are stalled, are sure momentum killer. Extending drives, even when the do NOT result in a score, shifts the time of possession metric, exhausts their defense, and gives the game a much different feel.

If you can cap those drives with a score? Now you have worn them down, and then punched them in the gut. Makes it much, much more difficult to recover from and can change the entire complexion of a game.

Heartbreaking when these stalled drives come in the middle of the biggest games.

We really need a Jimmy Graham type mismatch for the red zone.
Jared Cook had 9 Touchdowns this season while missing a couple games, a healthy Kamara is a proven red zone threat, even Taysom is a match-up issue.

The mismatches are there the Offensive problems come when we play teams with Elite caliber Linebackers/Safeties. The Eric Kendricks/Anthony Barr, Jaylon Smith, Leighton Vander-Esch duos, Deion Jones. When teams can take away your Tight End, Running back mis-match player with a Linebacker or Safety you need someone else in your Receiving group to step up and beat them.

Saints need better route runners, and reliable hands catchers from their WR2, WR3, to win their match-up when teams are Doubling Mike Thomas all game and just intent on him not beating them.

Consistency from the OL needs to improve as well, they were a highly touted unit with a lot of accolades but they put up a few stinker games @LAR, first Atlanta game, and the Minnesota Wild Card game there was some awful OL play. I think you can upgrade at Left Guard, with a more athletic, light on his feet Interior player that can get to the 2nd level blocks quicker and fit the zone blocking scheme you would ideally run with Kamara/Taysom Hill.

The Oline needs an identity. 1 nasty LG would do the trick.
Cook is great but not a red zone threat.
Personally, I'd like an Oline that given a 1st and goal from inside the 5 would be an automatic TD. An Oline that wouldn't care if you put 12 guys in the box would get 4 yards of movement every run play. Just a killer instinct.

Jared Cook is not a red zone threat? Funniest post of the offseason so far.

What if Brett Favre takes a knee and the Vikes kick a 56 yard goal?

Or if he doesn’t throw across his body. I’m of the belief that this was payback karma for our NFCCG win against them. I think they were the better team that day in 2010 and we got very lucky. And I’ll take that trade off.

I don’t remember how much time was left or how good the Vikings kicker was but I don’t think there’s a coach in the world that wouldn’t try to get closer for a shorter field goal

If you take a knee and miss the long kick(especially if it’s barely missed, would have been good from just a couple yards closer) and you’d get flayed alive by the fans and media

There was time for 1 play to get closer then a kick. Farvre went full Farvre mode and instead of running out of bounds and let the kicker try a makeable FG to win he tried a throw across the body that ended in a easy pick.

This is one of two drives that may have cost us a Super Bowl. The third down call was horrible. The designed passes to Kamara not only weren't effective the second half of the season but they lost yards at an extremely high rate and killed a lot of drives. To call it on 3rd and 1 near midfield took away the option to go for it on 4th and short.

  • 1st & 10 at NO 23
    (14:57 - 3rd) A.Kamara left guard to NO 26 for 3 yards (S.Stephen).
  • 2nd & 7 at NO 26
    (14:20 - 3rd) (Shotgun) D.Brees scrambles left end to NO 31 for 5 yards (E.Griffen).
  • 3rd & 2 at NO 31
    (13:30 - 3rd) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass short right to L.Murray to NO 35 for 4 yards (H.Smith). Pass -7, YAC 11
  • 1st & 10 at NO 35
    (12:50 - 3rd) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass short left to M.Thomas to NO 41 for 6 yards (A.Barr). Pass 0, YAC 6
  • 2nd & 4 at NO 41
    (12:14 - 3rd) (Shotgun) L.Murray right tackle to NO 44 for 3 yards (A.Sendejo; L.Joseph).
  • 3rd & 1 at NO 44
    (11:33 - 3rd) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass short middle to A.Kamara to NO 38 for -6 yards (Jal.Johnson). Pass -4, YAC -2
  • 4th & 7 at NO 38
    (10:48 - 3rd) T.Morstead punts 50 yards to MIN 12, Center-Z.Wood, fair catch by M.Sherels

It is this drive that made me want to kick Payton in the nuts. It was one of the worst coaching decisions I've ever seen him make. On 3rd and 6 he calls a swing pass to Kamara that starts 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage. It was painfully obvious to me that he was treating this drive as a 4 down situation at our own 30 yard line and used 3rd and 6 to set up a fake punt. It was one of the most ego driven coaching decisions I've ever seen in the NFL. If we had a look we liked for a fake punt then if that situation comes up in the game then run the fake punt. Instead, the third down call was Payton directly trying to set up a 4th and short to run the fake punt. Who does that? I even called the fake punt on the gameday board because the third down call made no sense. Payton was trying to make himself look good and it may have cost us the game.
  • 1st & 10 at NO 28
    (3:17 - 3rd) D.Brees pass incomplete short left to L.Murray [I.Odenigbo].
  • 2nd & 10 at NO 28
    (3:11 - 3rd) (Shotgun) Direct snap to T.Hill. A.Kamara right guard to NO 32 for 4 yards (A.Barr).
  • 3rd & 6 at NO 32
    (2:36 - 3rd) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass short left to A.Kamara ran ob at NO 35 for 3 yards (H.Hill). Pass -4, YAC 7
  • 4th & 3 at NO 35
(2:07 - 3rd) (Punt formation) PENALTY on NO-J.Hill, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at NO 35 - No Play.
  • 4th & 8 at NO 30
    (1:50 - 3rd) T.Morstead punts 46 yards to MIN 24, Center-Z.Wood. M.Sherels pushed ob at MIN 34 for 10 yards (T.Hill).

According to many here, those were all Drew’s fault and the only reason we lost each of those games.
/End thread

Let's be brutally honest, Drew's supporting cast has let him down time and time again in the playoffs. Started with Nate Kaeding in San Diego and ended with Dennis Allen 2 weeks ago (watch Kirk Cousins vs SF it you're not quite convinced yet).

I was referring to the radio call "This is not Detroit man!". The point was Favre choosing to throw across his body. He could have run, but of course he was hurting due to bounties championship game hitting.

I always say "it's better to be lucky than good." :hihi:
