I think he might end up like Mike Shanahan in Denver once John Elway and Terrell Davis were no longer around. They had some good squads, but were never quite at the level of competing for Super Bowls when Elway and T.D. was on the roster. Any thoughts?

I think Sean Payton has enough of the hunger, drive and "It" as a coach to coach for a very long time and go down as one of the best ever. He will leave a legacy that rivals the great ones. Just for reference, after their age 56 season SP is 131-77 (1 SB win) and BB was 132-86 (3 SB wins). He only has 4 losing seasons on his record compared to 8 winning season and one .500 season. In his winning seasons he averages 11.9 wins per season, so these are not just 9-7 season, he's leading teams that are winning divisions and securing high playoff seeds. Before SP retires he will coach another HOF QB from early in the QB's career until the QB retires.

Denver just never got the QB situation right again after Elway. That possibility is always alive for any coach. Brian Billick wrote a whole chapter about how this makes or breaks a coach in his book.

And they had major success after Davis in the run game with several backs. But league rules, departure of Gibbs and other teams figuring out the psuedo chop block probably were responsible for grinding that to a halt.

It's a legitimate concern, to be sure. There's precedent from similar situations, with Shanahan in Denver being of course the easiest example to mention. I'm in the camp that says Brees comes back in 2020 and renders this (mostly) moot for yet another season. Brady will be back somewhere in 2020 to try to get back in the race for all-time TD passes. The "rest of the future," to to speak, lies with what Teddy decides to do this offseason.

The best 5 game stretch of his career as a Head Coach was with Bridgewater under center.

The problem is, he still thinks Brees in 2019, 2020 is the Brees from 2009-11.

If he coached and called games with Brees in 2020 (with more trust in the passing game WHEN NEEDED) the way he called and prepared for games with Bridgewater under center, this team could win a SB - and may have won 1 last year.

Payton may be a better COACH when Brees retires. I think Payton gets hung up on what Brees used to be and puts too much weight on him and he just isn't the same guy. Lean on the run game and defense like he did with Bridgewater, but know Brees is a better passer when its needed. The philosophy has to change about what Brees was and now is. And he is still a top 7-8 QB, but he is also 41.

Did you not see our offense when Teddy stepped in and got settled down? We’ll be more than fine had Ginn been a effective deep threat/2 still Teddy would’ve thrown for over 300 every game with 150+ rushing .

A lot will depend on the competence of the future QB. It will obviously be near impossible to have another on the level as Drew, but he's got to minimize mistakes.. sacks and turnovers. Game planning around the strengths and weaknesses of said QB will be crucial. I think Payton proved that he is extremely capable of that, if you look at Teddy's stretch, and even with a guy like Luke McCown, who we almost won a game with in a pinch. I'm not worried so much about having a competent coach in this situation, but rather the pieces we have around the new QB and playing smart. Sticking to the run game will be very important, which Payton has struggled to do, but maybe it will be easier when he knows he has to. Teddy's brief stretch showed that Payton is more than capable of adapting when necessary. It wasn't overly exciting, but it worked well enough to win. It definitely raised my confidence in our future.

On the contrary, I think he's shown that he's just getting started as far as his genius goes. When the challenges gets tougher, he seems to become an even better coach.

Agree.

This is why I buy the Taysom stuff more than others seem to. I think he’s ready to put his mad scientist cap on and create a brand new offense.
