Luckily, I'm in a super rural part of Big Island. To be honest I'm mostly worried about supply chain disruptions. Plus I work from home and it requires frequent visitors. I may need to start telling people not to come if they have any cold like symptoms.

Hope that you stay safe, but I have to say, you live in one of THE most beautiful places on the planet ?. ?

Now put the number of cases and do the math. Flu is more popular not more deadly.

Not sure we know that yet although it is probably a fairly safe bet you are correct. Initial under reporting of corona and labeling corona symptons as flu diverge the numbers even more. Either way it is nasty and something we don't want to have spreading around.

Many good references - one linked below.

Influenza kills the very old who are near death's doorstep anyway. A pandemic like the 1918 H1N1 for some odd reason targeted healthy 25-40 year olds.

The flu strain responsible for the 1918 pandemic was of avian origin. We will likely never know exactly how it spilled over into humans, but we do know that pigs can catch both avian and human flu viruses. We have seen that when this happens, that avian flu can develop the ability to infect humans. Not only does Kansas have more than a few pig farms, but southwestern Kansas–where Haskell County is located–sits along a major migratory path for more than a dozen bird species. Much has changed in the past 100 years, but the basic pathways of disease emergence have not.

The Avian / Bird flu does not discriminate. It kills the young/old/healthy and decrepit. The strain killed 80% of those infected in
Indonesia a few years ago. It makes Sars Mers and this corona virus the common sniffles by comparison

Unless the medical care and opinion is not very good, from what I understand, the flu and coronavirus are not really that similar. That said, we really need better testing methods to determine whether an individual has coronavirus.

From what I recall, a major reason for that crazy high mortality rate was because of the poor state of Indonesia's medical care system and their leadership's mishandling of that whole situation. Not only that, since there have been 3 travelers recently leaving the country with the coronavirus, many suspect they're not being honest about this current situation as well.
