Draft rumor: Saints targeting multiple WRs (1 Viewer)

Anything is possible but I don't see the Saints going that heavy that early in the draft at just one position.

I've said before that don't be shocked if the Saints go oline or defense at 24.

In all honesty if Sean Payton doesn't get it in his thick head that the Saints need to show some semblance of a balanced attack all the WR's on the planet won't make a bit of difference.

Laviska Shenault & Bryan Edwards.

Write it down.

I was going to post the same thing. That was be absolutely unfair to get Renault and Edwards to put on the field with MT.

I hope so!!! And if it happens.... it will be interesting to see how all of those on here who constantly talked about how we were fine at receiver...respond. We had the worst WR corp in the league last season, collectively.

The draft before a full offseason is different from expensive FA castoffs in the middle of the season.

I could see them get in the situation where you "have" to draft 2 receivers. I've been messing around with mock drafts, and after drafting a WR in the first, several times the 3rd or 4th round was stacked with receivers at the top of the list.

Tony Pauline has become one of the better follows wrt NFL reporting. He’s done the draft most of his career, but he’s also been ahead of a lot of the recent labor stuff.

Anyway, here’s a link to his latest and a quick blurb on the Saints:

“Yesterday, I mentioned that numerous general managers expect 15 receivers to be selected during the initial two rounds of the draft. Some are saying as many as 25 receivers could be drafted by the time the third round closes out.
Word at the NFL Combine is that the New Orleans Saints could select at least two of those 25 receivers. With Drew Brees announcing he will be returning to the Saints in 2020 and the need to add depth at the receiver position around Michael Thomas, sources in Indianapolis tell me it’s very likely the Saints use both the 24th and 88th selections of the draft on a receiver.”
One thing I can say for sure is that Tony Pauline has no idea who the Saints will select with picks 24 and 88. If this is true, this would be the first time in Loomis and Payton's carer with the Saints that they target a position with specific picks. They just started getting good at drafting. Why would they go back to doing dumb stuff again?

I don’t think it’s saying that they will strictly stay at 24 and 88 and take whichever the best WR is who’s there.

You’re correct. That’s never how Payton operates. But if they’re at 24 and there are a bunch of WRs left in their cloud, they may trade back. Or if they’re at 88, and they see a run of WRs in the high-70s, they may trade up to make sure they get their guy.

I think the overall feeling from this report is we are looking very closely at WRs and we’re not shy about it. Payton is never good at hiding his draft intentions.

If only we had the cap space for Amari Cooper. Feel like he would be a great piece. He'll enjoy his $80 million contract

Peoples-Jones will be a steal if he’s there in the third, he basically had a punter for a qb and did well against top competition.

I prefer to add a veteran receiver with playoff experience.

I do think we will be drafting a WR in the 1st round because of the abundance of talent. I expect a LB or Tackle/Guard type of player in the first. Free Agent for our WR and draft a QB in the 3rd round.

"Man this draft is so loaded at wr we could find a starter in the third round..........LETS TRADE UP!"

-Payton

The Saints identify players that they want... then they put plans together to go and get their guy if that player is still available in a tradable spot. Their MO is not to wait around and take what falls to them.

Exactly. There might be 27-30 with Round 3 or higher grades, but 1st round grades are in the 6-8 range and then there is everyone else.
