Bengals will franchise AJ Green (1 Viewer)

Not a good choice for the bengals to franchise him imo. Let him walk and take the comp picks. If they trade him, then it works in their favor. He is an older wr who will be playing with a rookie qb.

I agree. He is worth it in his prime. Maybe they are in talks for a sign and trade and are just threatening this to get the agent to the table

But any sign and trade means the bonuses in future years accelerate to the Bengals cap. There's not going to be a compelling reason for the Bengals to do that. Do you mean a tag and trade?

well I hadn’t thought all the specifics out, just that it might be a bluff. If I’m looking to build a team from the ground up and want a cornerstone, an aged skill position player would be a poor choice for me. Young stud lineman... or pretty much anywhere but aged skill position honestly. But that would be very Bengles of them.

AJ will turn 32 before the start of the season.
He didn't play at all last year due to injury.
He only played in 9 games in 2018
Franchise Tag will cost somewhere around 18+Million

Totally does not make sense until you realize that the Bengals have about 45 million in cap space.
And if they do let Dalton walk, that becomes 62 million in cap space.

This all depends on the type of tag they use. If its exclusive, Burrow should pull an Eli. 19 million on a receiver that is 4 months OLDER than Dez Bryant and played the same amount of games last year tells me that the Bengals are doing Bengal things.

If its non exclusive, the Bengals are just trying to squeeze something out of it. A franchise player usually commands 2 1's, but we know that aint happening. Id be surprised if Cincy got better than a 3 for him, maybe a late 2 from a contender who can take a risk.

Does any contenders have the cap space for a 32 year old 19 million dollar WR that's been on IR for a year and a half?

Exactly, Green is a tangible asset. If he's recovered, he's a huge bonus to help your new franchise QB settle in. If he's someone that other teams want enough, then you have a tradeable asset as you head into the draft.

And if he isn't recovered, you have the cap room to hold on and wait, or you just remove the tag.

For those who like to dump on Cincinnati, this is clearly sound franchise decision making to protect and benefit their team. Green has been a good soldier throughout and makes all the right noises when asked about staying there.
