Saints Saints Re-sign Andrus Peat/5 year $57.5M ($33M Guaranteed) (1 Viewer)

This. I’m a big fan of Bell and wanted him back, but if he wanted more than that we’d have been overpaying with that move too. IMO.
I’m a huge fan of bell too, but if he turned down 7.5 mill a year we have to move on. It looks like Mark Ingram all over again, he will end up taking less. All the teams he was rumored to signed a cheap safety already. I wish guys would something’s trust their heart and not the greedy agents. Sometimes agents mark up your value and it’s not really the leagues value.

Out of curiosity, what would you have done at Guard if you were in charge?
Was the level of play between Peat and Easton very discernible?

You got Easton in the fold, you go get another G in free agency that's cheap (5-7 million) and let them compete.

And we haven't even started to discuss Peat's injury history. How you gonna guarantee 3 years worth of the contract?

Should have been 4 years, $34 million, $17 million guaranteed.

The Peat signing is the Saints signing that has generated locally and nationally the most, and perhaps the only real, criticism. This year's draft class at guard is below average. And I wonder whether Brees was willing to sign for an amount well below Brady's because the team assured him that it was trying to resign Peat and add another receiver in free agency.

Stop...just STOP. Sean Payton won't pretend to know how to do our jobs...let's stop acting like we know better than a guy who makes millions a year and has played QB and has coached a team to a superbowl victory.

STOP

Oh, hi. Just logged in for the first time in a while.

Not sure I'd say I have serious knowledge but thanks for saying so.

I just posted my thoughts on Peat on another thread
Other thread

Not sure if it's particularly insightful but yeah, I was a little surprised we resigned Peat to a pretty significant contract. That's more because cap space is finite and we had a cheaper backup who at times played better than Peat. I thought we'd use the money elsewhere. Without knowing what we lose by signing Peat (either our own players not re-signing, or new players brought in), it's obviously a good move. Peat is at worst an average starter at LG. He's been an active part, though in my view not a critical piece, of a very competent OL which drives a very high calibre offense. I thought he played better in 2018 than 2019 but that's without any proper, systematic analysis.

What I do find a bit odd is that Senio Kelemete was loved by this board, but he's barely half the player Peat is, who is generally disliked by the same people. Never quite understood that.

[and just for clarity, I was a bit down on Peat this year. This was based on analysing two games v Rams and v Vikings. These were not his best games. He could have been poor in every other game, or a world beater, I don't really know as I didn't analyse those games. I've analysed other games from 2018 where he's been fantastic. This tells me he's probably somewhere in between on balance of things - generally pretty solid]
Nice to see you back, Belfast! We definitely had a great chat analyzing the Vikings tape of Peat awhile back so you're someone I always enjoy their insight from. :)

Also I literally just thought about what you said about Kelemete the other day and was wondering the same. Kelemete AND Tim Lelito (to a lesser degree) both were beloved in their limited spot duty filling in at guard yet Peat just seems to be the whipping boy.

I never liked Tim but I was one that liked and appreciated Kelemete.
I attempted to convey why I thought Senio was held in high esteem earlier in this post.

Haha, fair enough. He was a really good bandaid turning his time here. I remember some posters thinking we should've paid him starting money (for the time) instead of letting him walk in free agency. All the ups and downs of NFL fandom, I suppose.

Yea to me he was not worth starter money and he’s not half as good as Peat.

I admit, I don't like to get overly negative about our players, and least of all our OL. I try to be as honest as I can be but still try to temper it a little. Two cases I would reference:

> One of the original forum OL whipping boys was Daryl Terrell. He got mercilessly abused by many on here. However, he's a guy I played with and was really one of the nicest guys you could meet. He wasn't playing well, admittedly, but then he was an undrafted guy, really just starting out in his career. I didn't like seeing the over the top criticism that much, but it is what it is.

> I once criticised Zach Strief on this forum back when he was taking over from Stinchcomb and I think I probably went a little bit further than I meant to (which I rarely do to be fair), and ended up getting called out about it by his dad through IM.

Not telling anyone else what to do. I just think it's all too easy on forums to get a hold of a notion and then dig in, come hell or high water, refusing to take a step back and look at things again or from a new perspective. It's very easy to get invested in these group opinions.

Is it too soon to trade him?

Mickey Loomis holds a press conference.

Loomis: "We signed Andrus Peat with the best of intentions. But after reviewing SSF, we noticed that we made a grave mistake and for that reason we will now be trading Andrus for a bag of chips...which is what he's worth. Any questions?"

The offseason is about getting better. Face it, no team can get better in all areas. Every signing can't be an upgrade. Re-signing Peat isn't an upgrade, it's simply keeping a good unit good. I think it's a great move for several reasons. One being that Peat is as good or better than any guard out there that's available.

Another being that this year's draft is far from loaded at the position and even if there was a guy that we felt could be an eventual upgrade, it wouldn't happen immediately. Peat would still be the better guard until the new guy developed and transitioned into being an NFL guard... if that hypothetical guy ever actually developed into a good guard. Draft is a crap shoot. We've been blessed with an extended championship window with Drew coming back an our FO managing so far to hold on to the core players that make us contenders. We simply don't have time for a rookie to develop, if he develops. The Ramczyks and McCoys... the OL players that come out year one as studs, are the exceptions. They're relatively rare.

Mostly, I think our coaches have a much different take than us fans on Peat's performance and value. At least the contract says so anyway. Sean Payton has shown that when it comes to certain positions, he prefers a guy that runs the correct play the correct way every time over a guy with Big upside that makes mistakes. OL is definitely one of those positions.

Another thing to chew on is the reason for many fans' take on Peat... Injuries and obvious plays where he gets beat. Injuries to OL are not limited to Peat and Armstead. We just seem to focus on them since they're on OUR team and we see them magnified. If you watch any football game on any level, you'll see OLmen helped off the field by shoulder or cart in almost every game. It's a position group that is at high risk for injuries due to the jumbled mass of giant men in close quarters and the speed and velocity that takes place close to the line of scrimmage more than anywhere else on the field. Peat's injuries have been both unfortunate and unavoidable.

As for Peat losing one on ones... It's football, pro-football. The guys he's blocking are the best defensive linemen on earth. They get paid a LOT of money to win at the LOS. Peat wins WAY more than he loses. Is he elite? No. But there are only maybe 3 to 5 OG's that you would consider elite. And they lose one on ones sometimes too. And just like with the injuries, we being Saints fans, we tend to notice when our guys get beat more than when we're watching other teams. It's almost like we look for things to fuss about :)

And I'll be the one to drag this old beat a dead horse fact back up, even though it's been a point of argument here on SR. With Peat, we have a good LG and a passable LT when needed. And that's been needed many times already since we drafted him. There are not enough passable LTs to fill out all of the NFL rosters. Normally when a LT goes down, teams are forced to plug in a replacement level tackle and hope the QB doesn't get killed. With Peat, we're not one of those teams. And with a 40-something year old QB... we can't afford to become one of those teams.

So far in free agency, our team has improved in some areas and stayed the same in others. But most importantly, we haven't had to downgrade any position. This is important, especially on the OL.

I'll let you tell Peat's agent that. Good luck getting him signed.
