NFL changing playoff format (1 Viewer)

Lovie Smith’s coaching tenure in Chicago might not have ended had the Bears made the playoffs his final three seasons instead of missing out by one spot his last two years.

Playoff droughts in Cleveland and Tampa Bay wouldn’t be nearly as long or painful had the Browns and Bucs sneaked their way into the postseason as the third wild card in 2007 and ‘16, respectively.

The last two Super Bowl champions could have had a tougher time winning titles if Kansas City (2019) and New England (2018) had to play games on wild-card weekend instead of earning byes..........

The week off is highly determinantive of making it to the Super Bowl.

The second seed will not beat the 1 seed at the same rate it did since 1990, that's a fact. And I think the difference will be stark. Plus I think the 2 seed will make it to the conference CG much less often now.

Which means the 1 seed will be playing a lesser opponent more often in the championship game, allowing them an easier path to the Super Bowl.

They'll reverse this after the 10 year CBA is over.

I don’t see them reversing it they will just up it to 8 teams and no byes.

Shorten the season, do away with the playoffs, just let the best record AFC & best record NFC team go directly to the SB. j/k

We should all keep in mind that the very same geniuses who thought it would be a capitol idea to place not one, but two, NFL teams in Los Angeles are now tinkering with the playoff scenario. Dumb ideas, based on a foundation of greed, could ultimately lead to the demise of the league itself. There is no rule.... or regulation..... or law-of-the-land that says the NFL must and will remain popular with the people, things like this are chipping away at that popularity.

One rule I wish they would change is that the division winner doesn't automatically get a home game. If they play a team with a better record, that team should get the home field advantage. Seeds should be based on records.

I can’t stand Goodell. I think the league has become nothing more than a poor caricature of its former self. That said, the guy we all call an “idiot” continues to make the owners more money, and we continue to pay for it. This decision adds two highly marketable and lucrative games to the post season. The “idiot” continues to be a buffer between the fans and ownership. The “idiot” represents and does the bidding of ownership. Ultimately, as a collective group, they are to blame for the NFL’s ills.

Yup. The fans hate him, but the owners pay him $40 million a year.

That seems incongruous until you realize that he gets paid that money in part to be hated. Fans direct their ire toward him and not toward the owners. Every bad thing the NFL does causes 32 fans bases to curse his name instead of considering the 32 billionaires behind the curtain who actually made the decision.

Wouldn’t that have always been true though?

Did fans hate Rozelle and Tagliabue the same way?

Yep.
And it’s amazing that so few realize this.

Not that I recall. But I think that the nature of the NFL owners have changed. The era of a local businessman buying the team is over. That generation of owners were still rich powerful dudes, but they were part of the community, and I think that they approached their decisions with a sense of "what would the fans like to see."

Now, the guys coming in are all billionaires to start with. And you don't make billions by having some really good used car dealerships in town. Their relationship with the fans as people is nonexistent. They don't have that connection that the older owners used to.

As the owners have gotten more out of touch with the fans, their decisions are going to be more and more fan-unfriendly. And the Commish is paid to deal with the fallout from that.
