These years are special as a saints fan.

Its special watching new names become superstars.

Its special watching Brees and Payton continue their dynamic run at History and the record books.

That being said , there exists a degree of sadness for me. I liken it to spending time with a grandparent you know who hasn't got long to go on. You try to enjoy it , and soak it all in , seize the moment. But the ending is inevitable.

Its gonna hurt when Drew hangs em up. And I hope we go 19-0. But my mind has been heavy on what lies after the confetti drops.

I've not been one for Optimism post Brees for obvious reasons if what was here before him is of any indication.

But I think the football gods have given us some reason for optimism.

Franchise Quarterbacks arent easy to come by. And for the first time in recent memory , there could legitimately be 4 or 5 available to us.

1. Taysom Hill - Payton says that's his guy. 4.4 speed. Cannon of an Arm , Hits like Luke Kuechly , just makes plays.

2. Jameis Winston - Throws for 5k and 30 Plus TDs. Young no injury history to speak of. Also threw 30 picks , but recently got lasik ... I mean it cant get worse after lasik can it ?

3. Cam Newton - Receives a mind boggling amount of hate on the boards but , at his best he was better than anyone and everyone. Does he have the humility to learn and sit behind Brees ? Is he healthy ? Because Sean Payton gets a blend of Taysom and Drew in a Healthy Cam Newton , and them some.

4. Tua - Should be the No.1 pick had he been healthy. Could he fall just enough for us to make it happen ? I think drafting him is like Sean getting Drew as a rookie. I think we should move heaven and earth to get him. I feel he can be Mahomes like with our offense and coaching.

5. Deshaun Watson may hold out on an extension to get the F out if Houston. Cut from the same mold as Rusell Wilson. Would be an obvious no brainer if the chance presented itself.

Regardless of who it is and what direction we go , I think Sean Payton would have a field day with any of these guys. And I'm excited about what we decide to move forward with in the future.

I'm also excited about the future, just not for the same reasons you are.

1. Taysom Hill is not a franchise qb. Maybe he gets there and SP turns him into one, but he wasn't even the second best qb on our team last year.

2. Jameis Winston is bad at making decisions and is just an all round horrible human being.

3. Cam is old and injured and doesn't throw very well. Sure he was good when leading all qbs in rushing yds, but is he still that guy. And if he is, can he play a whole season like that?

4. Tua is coming back from an injury and will cost too much draft capital to get. I feel if we going to go that route we may as well trade everything for Burrow (not a fan of this either btw)

5 We don't have cap space to sign watson.

I am excited about the future because Sean Payton aint going anywhere soon, and Jeff Ireland seems to be doing an amazing job in the scouting/drafting department. We have a bunch of young talent and one of the best coaches in the nfl. We don't need Deshaun Watson to be successful.

Nice post.
Except you accidentally talked about the possibility of Cam Newton becoming a Saint.

Correct that and it’s a truly wonderful and well thought out post.

? spot on. Great post.

And Deshaun Watson won't be available for trade. It's pure speculation.

I think the future depends on 2 things (that have some venn diagram overlap):

1. Luck - either that a QB falls in our lap and fits or Taysom shows more consistency than he has so far
2. Peyton - will he be able to adapt to the new QB (would he be able to design a system for Taysom?)

They will more than likely draft a QB.

Trading for a guy like Josh Rosen isn't a bad Idea either.

I don’t think Peyton will be interested in designing a system for Taysom. He seems content in retirement.

In fairness it’s the same type of speculation as you saying he ‘won’t be traded’.
Agreed, except for the facts of the matter massively favouring my speculation. Backing the steady state over the wildly unlikely is of course always going to be that way.

Informed speculation, rather than pure speculation, if you like.

We’ve got a lot of good, young talent on the roster. If we can hit on a rookie QB in the next draft or two, the team will be in position to stay competitive.
