RIP Ellis Marsalis (1 Viewer)

Oh, I’m just now seeing we have a Corona victim thread. I guess this one likely belongs there but it would be refreshing to find out he just passed because he was 96. Sigh.

Ive got him streaming right now. It should be making me sad but he has so much beautiful music that it really is just kind of bitter sweet. He had a long amazing life. It just sucks that he is likely always going to be associated with this

Legend

I played basketball with Wynton in Buenos Aires and got to talk with him a little about music and his family-they were/are music
Jason went to Loyola at the same time I did. Nice kid, very introverted/kept to himself... he was always walking around campus playing air drums while wearing head phones... He didn't talk much about the fam in detail but he said they loved doing what they do, which is making music...

Ellis passing is a huge loss for NOLA and music in general...

My wife went to NOCCA with Jason
He sat behind her on the bus and played drums on the back of her seat every day
She does not recount this story fondly
But she will def be sad to hear about Ellis’s passing in the morning

RIP to a legend.

I had the great honor to play 2nd chair trombone to Delphio at a summer band camp between my junior and senior year. However, it wasn't until after the camp had ended and I saw the program from the concert we did that I knew Delphio's last name was Marsalis.
I did get to say hi to him once during my Senior year at some Franklin High School function or party (my best friend Ken went to Franklin, I did not). At least I knew who he was then. I wish I had known at band camp, I would have been asking him 1000 questions about his Dad and a whole slew of legends who played with him (he probably would have hated that, but I don't know).

Anyway, Ellis' music lives on and his spirit in it...

Don’t know the family/their music, but so sad when Corona steals lives. Will definitely have to YouTube Mr Marsalis now.

he was fantastic himself. As a teacher he taught not only his sons (who probably eclipsed him in terms of fame) but also guys like Harry Connick and Terrance Blanchard. He left a serious mark on the music world in general.

Three years ago (I think but maybe only 2) he and Allen Toussaint did back to back shows at the FQF. Something happened and I didn't get to go as planned. That is something I guess I will always regret now.
