The combination of Jim Mora, Drew Brees, and the Dome Patrol Defense. Would the Saints be able to win a Super Bowl with that combination during that era?
Having Drew Brees, Eric Martin, and Dalton Hillard is a solid Big Three on offense. But would Jim Mora realize that?

That’s a solid big one on offense. Now if you want to talk about Brees, Thomas and Kamara. Yeah I think that’s enough to compete with the 49ers.

The issue is...who is the offensive coordinator???? If it's Carl Smith...not sure it helps.... that guy was not good in terms of his play calling....

Jim Finks makes a sweet offer to Andy Reid and plucks away from Bill Walsh's coaching staff. Reid is turning out to be Walsh's best pupil.

That's your OC

I doubt it makes a difference. Mora was always conservative to a fault and even though Carl Smith didn’t join him in Indy, Mora still had the same deer in the headlights look every time he got into the playoffs. Moras big fault was that his teams won on playing strong defense and absolutely mistake free conservative offense. In the playoffs that got worse. I swear he would’ve punted on first down because he was scared to take chances. Compare that with New England, Payton, Reid. These guys realize it’s playoffs and you have to dig deep and come up with something different and get an edge. That was never Mora. It did great in the regular season, but not in the playoffs, and I don’t think Brees would’ve made the difference.

Thinking objectively here. Mora would of been too conservative to allow Brees to develop into the quarterback he is today. People need to remember that Hebert was a pretty good quarterback in the USFL. He had some nice deep throws in that league. People may have criticize Bobby for his play but I will say 75 percent of Bobby's poor plays sometimes need to go the Mora's play calling. With Mora making the call, I am really doubt Brees would be allow to do the things he is doing now. But replace Mora with Payton, we will be talking a different game. Mora has always been my favorite coach and the right coach for that era.

I don't know Holgrim's(I know I mispelled it) staff in GB was a bunch of guys who went to win SBs (Gruden, Reid and a couple more).

He would have stifled Brees ability to get into a rhythm....

Yep, I've been basically been saying the same thing for years now. Mora never understood that to win playoff games you had to take chances, he had the same gameplan and never wavered, never made half time adjustments and was 0fer in the playoffs. People sometimes forget he failed to win a playoff game with (an albeit young) Peyton Manning as his QB....

With Karl Smith as the OC, even with Brees, the offense would've sucked. Dude wouldn't adjust to any defenses that were thrown at him.. I distinctly remember playing the Browns one season, all they did was blitz and they killed us. Smith wouldn't adjust to that scheme for nothing.

I do respect Mora. However I agree with you that he was not an offensive coach in any way.

That could be a pretty funny miked up during a time out:

DREW: Coach, I'm thinking we go Empty Trips Right Tango X Slant Verticals Pony Dog Option Avocado and catch the safety napping. What do you think?

CARL SMITH: Hmmm. Let's do I-formation off-tackle again.

Agreed 100%. And we know exactly what type of QB Brees would've been in such a system. Just look at his QB play under Schottenheimer, playing "Marty Ball" in San Diego. Now slide that Brees sideways into a Smith-led offense on a Mora team. Seamless transition, IMO.

Drew Brees makes every team better. The only coach who could have stopped them would have been Mora. Although, sometimes I wonder if Jim’s offensive approach was influenced by personnel (meaning capability of QB). It was probably a little of that, and a lot of Mora’s general approach.
