The discovery of a small community in the Dominican Republic, where some males are born looking like girls and only grow penises at puberty, has led to the development of a blockbuster drug that has helped millions of people, writes Michael Mosley.

That's pretty cool that you lived in Australia. Aussie-Aussie-Aussie!

Today I learned the U.S. has 20 aircraft carriers, which is the most by any country. Also...

"A carrier strike group[1] (CSG) is an operational formation of the United States Navy. It is composed of roughly 7,500 personnel, an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer squadron of at least two destroyers or frigates,[2] and a carrier air wing of 65 to 70 aircraft". wiki

North Korea has the most submarines by any country, which totals 83. That was a bit surprising.

TIL Home depot has 5 different ways of saying the three year warranty on your power sprayer really means nothing unless you're willing to ship it 100 miles away and pay $50 for the handling of said item. Also it may take four months to return it .

i wheeled it through their store depositing parts randomly amongst their bins and aisles until i was left with the spraygun.

bite me arthur.

Actually, we have 11 aircraft carriers in service (12 soon). Nimitz and Ford class... Still the most in the world. 1 more under construction, and 2 on order past that. Unless you're counting our 9 helo carriers, but those are different. The newest Wasp class https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasp-class_amphibious_assault_ship makes things a bit trickier, since they also have STOVL aircraft on them.

Today I learned that helicopter specific carriers exist. Decommissioned carriers could probably be recommissioned, if a need arose. Was watching a YouTube video of the airplane grave yard in Arizona, and it said, if the planes in the grave yard were to be recommissioned, it would be the second largest Air Force.

Doubtful they would be recommissioned. Hanger heights and deck strength rule out any remaining Essex class, Midway at this point would take more work than it’s worth, Most of the first generation of super carriers are either already scrapped on in some stage of it. Enterprise already has her reactors coming out if they aren’t already. That basically leaves the Nimitz and Ford carriers. Nimitz was launched in 75 so she’s no spring chicken either. There 10, Ford is still being brought up to service ability, and Kennedy was just launched. So while on paper 11, Ford isn’t ready and I believe 2 of the Nimitz class are being overhauled.

I worked in the shop next to one being refurbished a couple years ago while assisting with the subs which are a seldom mentioned part of the carrier group for protection. The recently christened JFK was under construction at the time.

We currently only have about 3 carrier groups actively deployed. The turnaround to get a group launched again from even routine patrols takes a long time, so Ill agree with forgetting about us ever getting desperate enough to pull ships out of mothballs. The world would likely be over by then.

I remember the Navy distributing procurement plans over the next 30 years at our plant. Ill see if I can find them.

This chart way down the page can be moved to page 13 and zoomed...
