The way I see it, there's only two guaranteed locks to become franchise QBs in this draft (1 Viewer)

Those two quarterbacks are Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa. Everybody else is a wild card to me. In the games that I saw Herbert play in, I wasn't impressed. However, his 6'6, 238 lbs frame are the tangibles that scouts love In QBs. He is also mobile as well. Jalen Hurts IMO is the dark horse to succeed after Burrow and Tua. The game against LSU in which I saw Jordan Love was not a fair critique for him. However, he has the potential to succeed on the next level, but I think he should sit behind a vet in year one.

Completely agree. Hopefully for us, teams may select the other two in the first, pushing better players down the board.

Burrow is as close to a can’t miss prospect as I’ve seen in a while and Tua just needs to stay healthy. What you mentioned about Herbert is tangible, it’s the intangibles where the questions lie with him. He has all the talent in the world, but can he go through his progressions and make quick, correct decisions consistently ? Love, likewise, has all the physical traits you look for in a QB, but it was only on display against inferior opponents. I personally don’t see Hurts making it as a QB in the NFL, he just doesn’t throw well from what I’ve seen. Jake Fromm has all the intangibles, but not sure he has the arm talent to be a starter. He will be in the league for a long time though as he seems like a perfect backup. Jacob Eason has a cannon for an arm, but is inaccurate. He is more of a project, but has long term potential.

Well we don't know how Tua is going to come of this catastrophic injury.

So with that, it's very possible you could slide Herbert into the 2 slot in a list of can't miss QBs.

However, I don't come anywhere close to thinking Herbert is a sure bet.

Justin Herbert & Jordan Love are enigmas. Sometimes they both make plays that only they could make and then others they look like the bad Jameis Winston. Herbert needs to tuck his left arm in on throws cause it messes with his follow through and he ends up wildly inaccurate at times. He also just needs better feet in the pocket and on throws. A lot of their negatives can be fixable if they get in the right situation with the right coach. If Drew had hung up the cleats this offseason than I would take either one of them cause I think coach could change their bad habits after time. I really like Jacob Eason as well with his big frame and big arm. If he fell to our 3rd round pick he would be hard to pass up if I were making the decisions. I wouldn’t touch Jake Fromm or Jalen Hurts unless they fell to the 5th or 6th round. We need players that can help us this year like a LB or 2, a WR, and a corner. I don’t think we need a WR, but the value will be too much to pass on in the 4th or 5th round when I want to take one. Literally every team ought to end up with a pretty damn good receiver in this draft

But yes Burrow and Tua look like the real deal and have a good chance to be All Pro franchise QBs.

I agree with you, OP. I don't really like any of the other QBs. Herbert is garbage, Fromm's ceiling is Brad Johnson, and Love is super raw.

Tua if healthy is pretty can't-miss. Even Burrow has some questions based on his very small sample size of top level performance that all came from a Big-XII style spread offense (with no snaps under center).

This is a bad year to need a QB.

Joe Burrow has 0 questions. Dude is the best QB recruit since Luck.

Dude had one really, really good year and one borderline awful year. There's plenty of questions, especially given the WR talent around him at LSU.

Yea I'm not sold on Burrow until he puts up great numbers against NFL defenses. Depends how the Bengals or whoever run their offense and what kind of weapons Joe has around him. Even then, a lot depends on Burrow himself.

I would allow every other team to overproject these less than solid QBs and let the much better players at other positions fall to us.

There is an object lesson to be learned from the top of the 2011 draft:

† = Pro Bowler

Rnd. Pick # NFL team Player piece of work.
1 1 Carolina Panthers Cam Newton † QB
1 2 Denver Broncos Von Miller † LB
1 3 Buffalo Bills Marcell Dareus † DT
1 4 Cincinnati Bengals A. J. Green † WR
1 5 Arizona Cardinals Patrick Peterson † CB
1 6 Atlanta Falcons Julio Jones † WR Alabama
1 7 San Francisco 49ers Aldon Smith † LB
1 8 Tennessee Titans Jake Locker QB
1 9 Dallas Cowboys Tyron Smith † OT
1 10 Jacksonville Jaguars Blaine Gabbert QB
1 11 Houston Texans J. J. Watt † DE
1 12 Minnesota Vikings Christian Ponder QB
1 13 Detroit Lions Nick Fairley DT
1 14 St. Louis Rams Robert Quinn † DE
1 15 Miami Dolphins Mike Pouncey † C
1 16 Washington Redskins Ryan Kerrigan †
1 17 New England Patriots Nate Solder

J. J. Watt was drafted by the Houston Texans and has been voted defensive player of the year three times by AP and three times by the PFWA.

The other non-QBs have done pretty well for themselves as well. By reaching for the likes of Gabbert, Locker and Ponder, those teams missed out on some very good and occasionally excellent players, and left themselves still looking for another QB a few years down the line.

Great post. Love has a lot of Jake Locker vibe, too.
