I’m in the process of doing a mock, and I’m trying to really evaluate this pick. It is absolutely the biggest pick in the draft and there’s so many dominoes to fall from this slot. I want you guys to help me make this decision.

Are you drafting a QB or looking purely for talent across the board, which the Lions need?

If you just want talent I'm probably taking the Pats deal. If you picked 100 random first round picks, maybe 5-10 of them will be better than Stephon Gilmore. He's by far the most valuable asset of that entire list. Then you still get two first rounders, albeit lower, but you could get some WR help which they could use.

If you want picks go with the Chargers. They're in a tough division and will be awful next year. That 2021 pick will be top 5 - so at worst you're getting the #6 pick this year and #5 next year for your #3. It's very possible that their pick next year ends up being better than #3 too.

The Chargers lack a franchise QB right now but outside of that, they’re insanely talented on both sides of the ball. I would argue that they have a safe bet top 5 defense. I think Carolina will be significantly worse than LAC and it’s a one pick difference this year.

Almost no chance of that happening, IMO. Chargers won 5 games last year and lost 6 of their last 7. They play to crowds of like 8,000 people, and they don't have a QB. They're more than likely going to be starting a rookie QB behind an absolutely putrid offensive line. And they aren't high enough in the draft to get one of the QBs that could handle that. Herbert or Love's first season with that OLine would be an absolute disaster. They are going to suck really badly.

With pick number 3 the SAINTS can go in any number of ways.
I am thinking with pick number 3 we could pick Tua Tungavialoa. In Sean Payton's offense Tua could be so dynamic.

They added the best offensive lineman available in free agency in Bryan Bulaga, they had a 3rd round developmental rookie tackle starting that showed some real promise in Trey Pipkins, Mike Pouncey is still a solid center and the guards have some deep draft/cash investment (Trai Turner, Dan Feeney, Forrest Lamp).

All of that for a team that was top 10 in total offense in 2019. Without the insane number of turnovers that’s a 9+ win roster, and they smoked a GB team that made the NFCCG.

Carolina is completely barren on defense, almost void completely of talent. Teddy is an average at best starter, and their WR corps is made of primarily vertical route runners, which is Teddy’s worst trait as a passer. McCaffrey is due to break down because of the mileage and their offensive line has been bad for several years. They also play in a division with two top 5 QBs of all time and a significantly more talented Falcons team. I think Carolina should not trade up, because they’re in good shape for Trevor Lawrence next year..

I’ll try to remember to circle back to this once the 2020 season is played. I feel confidently saying the Chargers will be a much better team than Carolina. If I were to predict today, I would probably place Carolina as the worst team in the NFL in 2020. And for the record, Tyrod Taylor has a 89.8 career passer rating compared to a 88.3 for Teddy. Listen, I respect the guy for his years here too.. But he’s average.

I don’t think that’s near enough for pick #3 alone, much less the added 2nd rounder.

Kerryon Johnson was a significant investment and has shown well when healthy. Kamara would be an added player, due a massive contract, at a position they aren’t overly needy at.

Problem with Kamara is he is a one-year rental. In 2021 you have to fight with the open market to sign him. They aren't really in the situation of wanting a player for one year. Then RBs are one of the toughest contracts right now.

Beyond that, you can also get into positional value. RBs aren't worth 1st rd picks in any situation imo.

Tough choice. I guess if Quinn and Patricia really are on the hot seat, I guess teaming up Gilmore with his old coach might be their best move. I haven't heard boo about Stafford's medical situation, so there's that to consider as well. Personally I would hate to lose the opportunity to draft Simmons, Okudah or Derrick Brown.... so the Chargers at #6 might be the best deal for me.

I think you could get more from Miami especially if you're throwing in a second.

Miami gets 3 and 35
Detroit gets 5, 18 and either a first or second next year. Then depending on how the board falls, could always trade 5 for 6 or 7 if you can get them to think they need to get to 5 to get the QB they want.

Theoretically Detroit trades 3 and 35 for 6, 18, 38 and the dolphin's first/second next year. Plus, you'd still probably get Okudah who they would've taken at 3.
