This has ALWAYS been the braintrust’s wheelhouse.

Now obviously 2-3 ( and 4) make it more often than 5-6-7.....but it’s more than that.

It’s not a guarantee, but 1st rounders are typically an easier pick. It’s day 2 where our guys shine.....every guy listed below could have been picked by every other team.

Since Ireland came on board, look at the major starters he’s found in 2-3-4.
Thomas
Vonn Bell
Oneymata
Kamara
Marcus Williams
Anzelone
Hendrickson
Tre’quan
McCoy
Gardner Johnson

in 4 drafts, we’ve drafted 11 players in round 2-3-4..... and found 10 starters. Rick Leonard is the ONLY one not there.

Meanwhile, in 5-6-7....we’ve drafted 9 players, and only Clapp has played meaningful time....and he’s definitely not a starter. Hampton and Elliss are still with the club.

So to recap...since 2016....

2-3-4......10/11 major hits and are starters.
5-6-7......1/9.

So with some very simple self evaluation, we know our sweet spot. We’ve surely identified round 1 guys that we can pick later.....and no one does it better.

So, knowing that, I’m THRILLED we traded Day 3 picks....no matter how many....for another pick in our wheelhouse.

Baun and. Trautman......clearly guys we ranked high, and we specifically traded up to get each in day 2.

We know how that works for us. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

You are going to get murdered for including Tre'quan Smith as a hit on that list. But, I actually think that he will be fine as a #3 receiver now that we have Emmanuel Sanders.

Good Analysis.

I love our draft this year and I agree with you on focusing on our bread and butter rounds. The Saints can only fit so many new faces on an already loaded roster.

Tre’quan has had some injuries each year that’s slowed him down, but he's also had some great moments when healthy. He’s definitely a piece on this offense that will play......there’s about 50% of 3rd rounds picks from a few years ago that won’t.
Even if you don’t count a guy that’s played a lot and done good things when healthy, we’re STILL 9/11.

We traded for 2 First round talents that slipped. So in all we pretty much got 3 first rounders in the draft. Good trades tonight. We filled our needs.
While I love the picks, but Trautman was not a 1st rd prospect. Rd 2, yes, but not 1st rd. I mean it’s easy to say it, but it’s not reality. He was definitely rd 2 worthy

Wow Rick Leonard. Worst 4th round pick in NFL history? I'd have to think so.

Just remember all the FO apologists saying trust the pick, when it was painfully obvious he was never gonna come close to making the 53.

I would say gangstas is the correct description for what we pulled off tonight.

10/11 ain’t bad.

Even Jordan missed a shot now and then.

Don't get me wrong. I agree. I don't think he was a bad pick for a third round guy. He's play a good bit and I think he will be just fine as a #3 WR. The problem is that he just couldn't make it as a #2 WR and people had the unreasonable expectation that he had to make it as the #2 WR or he was a bust.

I'm just saying that a lot of people will call him a bust because they have unreasonable expectations of 3rd round picks.

Also, I don't really have a problem with giving up the rest of the draft since we don't have a lot of spots open and there is still the possibility of finding another gem in UDFA. But, I would still be nice to have those lottery picks in rounds 4-7

Nick Underhill just said All three players the Saints picked were in their top 40. Impressive.

A good friend of mine follows Florida State. After the Saints drafted him in the fourth he sent me a text that was basically:

lololol. Leonard? In the fourth??? You’d have paid too much if you got him as a UDFA.

A fourth??? Ahahahahahah
