The Best Remaining Free Agents who fit the Saints (1 Viewer)

I don't think we have the "wallet" to spend more money on free agents anymore.

I wanted Ogletree and I still be happy if we bring him. But right now I think Marc Barron will be ideal to come for the specific role of defending against linebackers.

With an uncertain process in the next few weeks/months, I don’t think it makes much sense to sign an FA

And seemingly it’s depth signings we would be making anyway so just wait until other teams start shedding players

I think an argument can be made to sacrifice this season financially to help yourself next year. The Saints are clearly not in that boat but I could see the strategy.

I would feel very comfortable if Apple was brought back in to the fold.

I think his cover skills are very good at times. It’s a matter of knowing his weaknesses and limitations and we should be in better position to know that than almost all others.
Depth at any position with a veteran is always a good thing.

Here is the problem with Eli, who I liked.

He or any other person coming as a backup has to play special teams, and also has to have the flexibility to play different roles. Eli is just a boundary corner. We can't put him on the slot.

So, if we would bring more depth, I think Darqueze Dennard (formerly of the bengals) may be a better option to come for a backup role.

I’d would like to bring Apple back also. IMO being knocked out of the starting role may boost his drive to be better. When we traded for him and he had something to prove his first season here he played very well, then started slacking last season. Sometimes competition brings out the best in certain players and I feel Apple will benefit from it greatly. Plus, in Nickle and dime packages we could have Lattimore and Apple on the boundaries with Jenkins and CGJ in the slots.

Apple was just fine until he got injured. I wouldn't necessarily call it slacking. That's just me. He would definitely be great depth, but not sure we can afford him now. If we could bring him back cheap, it's a no brainer.

well the teams angle is valid especially considering we didn’t really draft any STeams Studs. I still just think Apple brings so much to the table that I hope they can figure out special teams while allowing us as much depth with CBS as possible.

He didn’t mention RB as a position that could use another player to compete, but I definitely think it belongs on the list. Washington is a STer only, and the Saints already keep 2 other players on the roster that are limited to that role (JT Gray and Hardee). The need for a 3rd RB came up last year, and the Saints had to pull Zach Zenner out of the recycling bin for a minute because Washington just can’t cut it.

Tony Jones Jr was added as an UDFA, but he’s limited athletically, and really doesn’t profile as a viable NFL RB. Maybe he could surprise though.

A guy I liked last offseason, in the hopes he would be a late cut, was CJ Prosise. He ended up sticking on the Seahawks roster, but he’s now an UFA. I love his versatility and speed, and it’s be great to add him to the RB corps. He may not be quite as good at STs as Washington, but he is a capable STer... he’s a much better RB than Washington though, and Prosise could actually contribute to the offense.

This was actually what I was kinda hoping for before he was supposed to go to the Raiders. I have nothing against Apple. He played well before getting dinged, then the wheels sorta fell off. Having him backing up Latt and Jenkins on the boundary would make me feel a LOT more secure than PJ, P-Rob, and Hardee. I feel we have an embarrassment of riches at Slot corner, but nothing after our 2 starters on the outside.

I know that PJ has filled in well for Latt in a few games, but that's not enough for me to feel good going into the playoffs if he or P-Rob have to carry us the rest of the way. A strong case could be made that if Apple would've been covering Theilen instead of P-Rob, that we win that wildcard game and move on to play a sorry GB team the next week. But that's all academic. The only remaining thin/weak spot on the team is back up outside corner. Now granted that PJ and P-Rob, even playing out of position, is better depth than most teams have at the position. But still. I'd love to see Apple back with us for one more season. History has shown that WE can NEVER have enough DBs.
