When Can Sports Come Back? (1 Viewer)

As he says, testing is a huge key (I would say it is the biggest key). Thankfully, everyone knows that and that’s where the focus lies.

Baseball is reportedly moving forward with a plan to return for spring training 2 on June 10, with a target opening day of July 1. That may sound a bit optimistic or even aggressive, but it is likely contingent on the testing anyway.

The bigger question to me is what they will do during the next wave? And what will they do when a player tests positive? Getting started is one thing. Navigating those and other issues along the way will be challenging as well.

And without a plan, can they really begin?

I wouldn’t think so.

I will say, I’ve been impressed by some of the details of the plans laid out by other sports. Some of the crazier details of the initial baseball plan have been fine tuned, and the NBA seems to have some good working ideas that leaked. So I’m hopeful they would also have a plan for the inevitable next wave.

But you’re right. If they don’t, then they may as well not start at all.

This is my thought as well. I just don’t see how we will get thru a season without someone getting infected. Which to me would shut it down again.

Gotta be the highest priority concern.

Please forgive me if I’m late on the news because I’ve spent the last month watching Marvel movies and Space Ghost Coast To Coast reruns, but is a second wave guaranteed?
From what I’ve heard, by the time the NFL season starts, there should be enough tests.

Well, the country is being opened back up and the first wave is still rising, so I don't think a second wave is really a concern right now. I don't see sports back until we have a vaccine and mandatory testing. We already have a second strain of this thing.

I think we will have a very steady level of cases throughout the early summer and then it will die out due to the extreme heat. Worst case a much reduced amount of cases from July through September.

The second wave is almost guaranteed in the latter part of fall (November) and going on thoughout the winter and into the spring and could potentially be much more disruptive that what we are going through now. My guess is it won't be because we will most definitely have a curative solution that will prevent almost anyone from dying from the virus. And without deaths we will tolerate many more cases popping up as long as it doesn't overwhelm the healthcare system.

I don't see a vaccine until January at the earliest and that's being overly optimistic.

BTW, a second stain is a good thing because it means the virus is weakening. This is what you actually want to see. Unfortunately, this second stain is notably more contagious.

Everyone talks about a 2nd wave. It will always be around. There will be spikes up, downward trends, flattened curves..etc. It is never going to be totally gone. It is a VIRUS! Unless miraculously, a drug is created to eliminate it, we will need to live with it and hopefully a vaccine will be discovered. A vaccine is our best hope to live close to the way we all once knew.

IMO, sports may be a good test, on how we should approach to handle this.

Exactly! People seem to have lost sight that flattening the curve was about keeping hospitals from being overwhelmed, not from keeping everyone from getting sick.

A vaccine isn't necessarily the only way to return to normal. We could all go back to work tomorrow while continuing to quarantine the most vulnerable and eventually a herd immunity will develop and the virus will die off.

You didn't read the article, did you?

When it hit, we knew almost nothing about it. We have learned a lot. Even if a "2nd wave" hits, it won't be nearly as frightening or deadly as the first. There have been such epidemics throughout history, but this is the first to hit us in the 24/7 news era, where fear and panic have added so much to the misery of the disease. We'll be fine, just as we have always been. We underestimate our own bodies, we will fight back physiologically as well as medically. If I were young, I would go to a Saints game without hesitation. It's better for old guys to wait for vaccination or excellent mitigation meds.
