Alright, I've been listening to more albums - in order, on Spotify - recently. With more time in the evenings to work I find having them on and listening has been really enjoyable. So I bought a record player, even though I only have one record. Outkast's Aquemini.

We had some records growing up, so did my wife. And we started looking at various lists online to try and come up with some that we think we'd like. But while liking music a great deal, my wife and I aren't extreme audiophiles. And I know people here are, much more so. I've compiled a sort of wishlist of albums we've listened to or had as CDs that we liked that would translate over well, in addition to titles that have been recommended as being good on vinyl, by artists we typically enjoy.

The genres are all over the place, I know, but wondering what SR/EE thinks we should include on our wishlist. The list below gives you an idea of those genres and we're open to any and all suggestions. The order below isn't really indicative of anything - just as I thought about or came across them.

John Coltrane - Love Supreme
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (I LOVE this album)
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Beatles - my wife is choosing these - she's the Beatles fan
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
Nirvana: Unplugged
Paul Simon - again, my wife is choosing
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Led Zeppelin - IV
Madvillany - Madvillain
Wu-Tang - 36 Chambers
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d. city; To Pimp a Butterfly
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy; Late Registration; College Dropout
David Bowie - again, my wife is choosing
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited or Blood on the Tracks
Carole King - Tapestry
Joni Mitchell - Blue (we think)
Radiohead - OK Computer
White Stripes - Elephant
Outkast - ATLiens; Stankonia
Lou Reed - Transformer
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Eminem - Slim Shady LP, Marshall Mathers LP
Dr. Dre - Chronic
Notorious BIG - Ready to Die
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Robert Johnson - The Complete Recordings

What would you add? What are some really good albums to have on vinyl and listen to on record?

The system isn't high-end. A mid-range Yamaha receiver with mid-high range Polk speakers and subwoofer in 2.1 - our living room isn't big, and the player is a Sony PS-LX310 if any of that information makes a difference. And I have an expensive set of Bose bluetooth headphones (and the turntable is bluetooth)

Check out Miles Davis: Sketches of Spain (I actually like that better than Kind of Blue)
Also, if you can find a Duke Ellington vinyl that has minnie the moocher, I highly recommend.

Are you looking to buy the album new, like on Amazon? Or are you going to try to find the originals at garage sales and flea markets? I've done both (I'm not an audiophile either) and it's much more fun to find an great album than to just order one. But you do run a higher risk of scratches.
Anyway we have similar music taste especially in rap (although I'm definitely a Beatles fan) so here are some of my favorites:

Jack White- Blunderbuss (sort of a more country-ish feel for White, but I dig it)
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple
Bob Dylan - Essential Bob Dylan
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Damn the torpedoes
Prince - Purple Rain
David Bowie - ChangesOneBowie

thanks - I am doing both. There are a few I'd like to have now, and will order, because who knows when I'll be able to get into a record store. Toronto has 3 places near the university, in Chinatown, that are really good record stores and I look forward to combing through the collections.

But for now, I'll probably start with a few - more reasonably priced (new they aint that cheap) - to listen to and fill out the rest from both ways as I go along. And I love going to garage sales, ever since my grandmother would pick me up early on Saturday mornings in Lake Charles and we'd go from one to another.

never looked for records there, though,

I think for sonic exploration you get on vinyl, I'd go with Physical Graffiti over LZIV.

And Paul's Boutique . . . for sure. One of my first "mature" vinyl experiences was in 8th grade when I "borrowed" my dad's vinyl copy of The Who's Tommy. It's still dear to me to this day as a result of those nights, sitting on my floor with headphones listening to it.

If you want a website where you can buy vinyl one is https://store.acousticsounds.com/ I technically have several vinyls and a player but I literally have zero room to hook it up. I have 3 Dream Theater albums(2 were released simultaneously on my bday), Pink Floyd's The Division Bell and Jimmy Page's Lucifer Rising. Also I think the Immersion box sets of Wish You Were Here and Darkside of the Moon came with some singles on the smaller vinyls. I really need to clean up my room so I can hook it up. Vinyl is supposed to have really good low end sound.

thanks for the shop link.

I'm not sure where I have it set up is ideal, but I don't have much space. It's close to the subwoofer, but I didn't detect any effect the vibrations would have had.

I really enjoyed the sound - I listened to Aquemini - 3 records, 6 sides. So I was at the platter a lot to change and flip. But there was something really enjoyable about that, and going in order, and not flipping or scrolling through a spotify playlist.

I like the idea but what I really love is DVD-Audio and Super Audio. 5.1 is my jam. Darkside of the Moon SACD is incredible as is Wish You Were Here. I also have those two on blu-ray and honestly the quality is almost as good. I think I can hear the difference but I could be lying to myself.

Yep that's what I do as well. Nothing beats finding an old record from the 60's and it sounding like new. And yes Lake Charles isn't exactly a musical hotspot but garage sales are really good for finding good stuff. And Lafayette isn't too far and usually worth the drive.

For purposes of brevity I'll just recommend one per artist, but these are some I have that I would recommend...

Allman Brothers Band -- Live at Fillmore East
The Beatles -- Abbey Road
The Black Crowes -- The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion
David Bowie -- Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars
Eric Clapton -- Slow Hand
Bob Dylan -- Highway 61 Revisited
The Flying Burrito Brothers -- The Gilded Palace of Sin
Free -- Fire and Water
The Grateful Dead -- Workingman's Dead
Led Zeppelin -- IV
Lynyrd Skynyrd -- Lynyrd Skynyrd (Pronouced...)
Steve Miller Band -- Fly Like an Eagle
Otis Redding -- The Dock of the Bay
Pink Floyd -- Meddle
Rolling Stones -- Sticky Fingers
Soundgarden -- Superunknown
Sly and the Family Stone -- Stand
Velvet Underground -- Loaded
Widespread Panic -- 'Til The Medicine Takes
