NCAA teams are struggling with Covid outbreaks. How does that affect the NFL? (1 Viewer)

I sure hope its not canceled but the logistics with the virus seeming to surge wherever major reopening is occurring makes this season real iffy.

If the season is canceled, my biggest Saints concern is if Brees would retire. What do others think about Brees coming back if this season is not played
If it’s crowdless, does it really count as a major reopening?

We played during MERS and SARS and Swine Flu. Okay, so this one is a bit worse. I am very very worried that we set a precedent for economic shut downs every time a new virus or flu strain shows up.

I think it is clear that we need to be ultra cautious in keeping the elderly and vulnerable from getting it. Everybody else? You are eventually going to get it, just like you get a cold or two every year. The question is, will you get it during another great depression, or will you get it, stay home ten days, and then go back to work and go back to living a normal life?

Yes, there are upticks in states that reopened. But I'm not hearing that hospitals are overwhelmed like I was hearing two months ago. That was the whole point (supposedly) of the lock down. If the healthcare system is not over-burdened and we can keep this thing out of nursing homes, we need to get back to normal. If they play, and they let me in, I'll be there.

Wrong, it does not SIGNIFICANTLY reduce your risk.

“At this time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved any type of surgical mask specifically for protection against the coronavirus, but these masks may provide SOME protection“

It helps, as long as people follow the other guidelines, of washing hands, not touching your face (mouth, nose, eyes). Simply by wearing a mask, does not SIGNIFICANTLY reduce your risk.

Nice try buddy.

There has been a ton of research done recently around this. Here's one good example:

I know you're probably not the "read a scientific analysis paper" type, so I'll spare you the trouble and just tell you that what you've said above is completely incorrect.

I sure hope I am wrong but I just don't see an NFL season, College as well, that won't be severely impacted by covid. At best, IMO there will be teams that get an outbreak that winds up having 1 - 15 players in in isolation having that team not be able to get on the field for one or more games. This thing too easily spreads and even though most of these elite athletes won't be hospitalized they will still be infected and able to spread further. As far as the stadiums and fans, that too IMO will be impacted greatly and I'd be surprised if you get more than 25% capacity allowed at games. What a mess!!!

Wow, the states that the largest upticks are places where they rushed to reopen: Florida, Texas, Arizona, S. Carolina, Montana, Wyoming. In other words, there is no correlation to civil disobedience.
Ummm. Mississippi was one of the last to close and first to reopen. Explain that one with your logic please.

And of course re opening will cause a spike. Who is so ignorant to think otherwise.? The whole point was to just slow it down to prevent hospitals from being overrun. If hospitals are overrun now, it’s due to to them having to fire and lay off so many people recently. My family runs hospitals so don’t accuse me of reading right wing headlines.

So people in Mississippi don’t matter. Point taken.
400,000 people live within 30 minutes of me...

I'm from the Gulf Coast, fam. The population density just isn't there. That's why Mississippi isn't going super crazy. Cool your jets, grandpa.

Do you mean Alabama where they are running out of ICU beds now?

I guess a global pandemic was conveniently started to disrupt our election but not the ones around the rest of the world, and 120, 000+ deaths is all a political move.

All one has to do is take a look at Brazil, They followed our blue print. Instead of treating it as a medical crisis. It became a political
war. Who would have thought ignoring the advice of medical experts would lead to this?

No way do we have football this year, college, pro, high school, you name it.

The chance of spreading the virus back home to player’s families, along with spreading it to coaches that are in the high risk realm, the season will be done before it even starts.

My prediction is, the season will be cancelled, after the first pre-season game, when so many teams will have players in quarantine.

Spot-on^ These are extraordinary times and there is so much unknown. I tend to think the colleges will cancel the season before the pros out of protection for the kids in their schools. From what I am reading on the latest updates, the virus seems to impact the lungs, even in asymptomatic people, where the damage is partially lasting. If this is true, then they have a responsibility to those college kids. And like the OP pointed out, some college teams have up to 30 players with the virus. How would they conduct a game?

And as you pointed out, it's not just the damage to the kids, but the risk of spreading to their friends and family

edit: If the colleges cancel, I wonder how that will impact the number of players who come out for the draft next year and how will teams evaluate players who have not played in over a year?
