Chip Kelly and the Eagles trying to trade Nick Foles, LeSean McCoy, and three 1st round picks for a shot at Mariota. Or was it Tampa for passing on the offer opting to draft Winston instead. I know hindsight is 20/20 but looking back, would you have taken the deal? Or would you had even offered so much for Mariota?

That is a very good question. I can make an argument for both being dumber, but overall I would say Tampa. 3 straight years with 2 firsts makes it easier to trade up for a Qb that could conceivably come into a pre-built team,

Neither was really that bad. Even with hindsight neither was "stupid".

Chip Kelly saw that the team needed to rebuild in its current state and saw that McCoy was nearing the end. And to move up to #2, three first round picks is about what it takes. There were a lot of reasons to believe that Mariota had what it takes to be a franchise QB. Who knows, maybe with better coaching and injury luck, he could have been. NFL careers are fragile and there's some luck involved.

Chip Kelly was actually right about the need to rebuild the team. He was just a bad coach and the entire organization hated him.

Winston was a great college QB and had all of the tools necessary to be an NFL franchise QB. Take a look at the QBs taken #1 in the last decade.

2019: Kyler Murray
2018: Baker Mayfield
2016: Jared Goff
2015: Jameis Winston
2012: Andrew Luck
2011: Cam Newton
2010: Sam Bradford

Winston is right in the middle of the pack (he is better than Mayfield, Goff, and Bradford). Which means the Eagles got average value at the #1 pick. Not good, not bad. Not "stupid".

And Winston still has opportunity to turn it around. He very well could be another guy who had a rough early career because of coaching.

I don't think either was stupid, TBH.

Neither was what I would call "stupid"....Outright incredible stupidity was the Bears not selecting Watson (who was rather obviously the best QB in that draft class) and doubling down by not just drafting Trubisky but actually trading up to do so....just a reminder that incompetent morons are present in just about every vocation.....

Yeah, there's a lot of revisionist history when people diss the bears for not taking Mahomes. But it was so, so stupid of them not to take Watson. Anyone who watches college football and has some grasp of the game knew that Watson was going to be, at the very worst, a decent NFL QB. He wasn't a guy (like Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen) where there were serious questions about his ability to make NFL throws. He was and is the total package plus a killer instinct and great intangibles.

That's a great example of an actual stupid decision that was obviously stupid even without the benefit of hindsight.

Danny White to the then-Baltimore Colts for a chance to draft Elway always intrigued me from the moment it was chronicled in the 30-for-30 doc on the '83 draft. It might've extended Landry's career in Big D.

If they wouldn't have traded up to get Trubisky, it would be much less stupid of a move. Especially with the quarterbacks they still could've drafted by standing pat, namely Watson or Mahomes. I don't recall many people having Trubisky rated higher than those two but they actually traded up to get him and make him the first QB drafted that year. That's just insanity.

I completely forgot they traded up.

And gave up an awful lot just to move up one spot to take the wrong QB.

Everyone knew of the Bears' love for Trubisky, and that included the San Francisco 49ers, who held pick No. 2 in the first round. Once the draft commenced, 49ers general manager John Lynch called Ryan Pace of the Bears to tell him to make him an offer to trade up, or else he'd be taking Trubisky. Pace panicked, and surrendered their first-, third-, and fourth-round picks in 2017 and a third-rounder in 2018 just to move up one spot.
They got played by the 49ers

Yep. Lynch has shown how smart he is repeatedly. Whereas Pace has had some bright spots but has been otherwise outclassed.

Gruden hosed him pretty well also. Mack is a nice player but your not going to make a playoff run when he is your best player.
