To come think of Brees rescued S.D from the whole Ryan Leaf debacle. Yes L.T helped a lot to but the Chargers still would of been horrible without Drew.

I would argue that they never did get rescued. Yes the blind squirrel got a nut but it couldn't figure out what was in its mouth was a nut until he was spitting it out for something shiny.

Danny White to the then-Baltimore Colts for a chance to draft Elway always intrigued me from the moment it was chronicled in the 30-for-30 doc on the '83 draft. It might've extended Landry's career in Big D.

There was actually another reason that Dallas offered to trade Danny White to Baltimore for Elway the 30 for 30 documentary failed to mention: White had been very outspoken in his pro-owner views and not siding with the NFLPA during the previous year's strike-shortened season and that stance didn't exactly endear him to many teammates, some who felt or believed White was never going to live up to his predecessor's success in leading Dallas to another SB win or appearance. I suspect in offering Danny White as trade bait to terrible Colts team Landry or Schramm privately had come to the same conclusion.

I know Landry or at least Tex Shramm did regret not pulling the trigger on Joe Montana in 1979, both men knew in their heart of hearts how potentially great Montana could be and after Montana's performance vs. Dallas in 1981 NFCCG, maybe drafting this powerful, duel threat QB out of Stanford could've eased Dallas near-decade long decline during the 1980s. I think an Elway-led Dallas team maybe extends Landry's HC tenure 5 more years, but not as long as Marino did for Shula and not as successful. Maybe with a decent, good supporting cast, Elway would make Cowboys a perennial playoff contender but I'm not sure they make any SBs, much less win one.

That mostly was due to their egotistical, domineering, butt crevasse of a former GM, AJ Smith. If you ask most former and even current Chargers fans in San Diego and now L.A., they'd tell you he's probably the single person most responsible for those 2005-2010 Chargers teams never making a Super Bowl and alienating so many All-Pro players, and future HOFs like L.T. and Brees. Some of these same Chargers fans might also tell you, as they have me, that if Drew remains a Charger, he would've retired around 2011 or 2012 without a SB ring and probably have 25-30,000 less career passing yards.

Plausible indeed. Also, and this was mentioned in the doc, White would've been reunited with his college coach, Frank Kush, in Baltimore. That team's move from Baltimore was apparently on its own time frame, with the rolling insanity that was Robert Irsay.

We didn't have a first-rounder that year. Bum had traded it to Green Bay for the rights to Bruce Clark, an All-American DL who'd gone to Canada for more money for a coupla years. It might've been Bum's only halfway-decent trade in his four years here.
