IS Davenport really on the hot seat or just bad injury luck? (1 Viewer)

Just bad luck thus far, but not nearly as bad as it’s made out to be, IMO. No repeat ACL tears or anything like that. Assuming he bounces back from the foot injury, I think he’ll be fine. Still very young and a couple more seasons to grow before we talk about the hot seat. He’s been pretty darn good for us, considering how raw he was when we got him.

I think people should get used to the fact that Davenport isn't going anywhere any time soon.

The upside for this guy is through the roof and he's shown flashes of it. He's made plays crashing down the line that a man that big isn't supposed to make. Just like Rankins when Davenport got injured the dline lost a lot of effectiveness.

If he can get past his little injury bug he's going to be something special!!

He has a streak of nasty up his back that is about a mile wide and you gotta love that about him.

Imagine him with the motor of DD or technique of Cam. And ability to avoid injury like Cam. Cam is great. We need him. Would start for every team in NFL. But Davenport could be a super freak.

I knows he’s not popular around here, but Coach Pete did say that word was he came into training camp out of shape last season.

The least injured players in the league aren’t because they are the luckiest. It’s because they take care of their bodies at an elite level. The key to reducing injuries is diet and training all year long (not just during season).

Coach Pete is extremely popular here. About 90% of the board loves him. the 10% who don't make all the noise. Just typical social media. The ones who raise hell get all the attention. And Pete, who stays in touch with Davenport's coaches says these 2 foot injuries are serious on his push-off foot. I have not asked him for an update but will if I get into the gym today. When healthy, that kid is a freak of nature.

As you mentioned, Coach Pete was stunned the 1st time he went to UTSA to watch Marcus at how far backwards equipment and training was at UTSA. Coach Pete said that UTSA football training facilities were not even as good as Westlake High where Brees and Foles went to school

Do you think coach Pete knowA if saints are pushing for clowney because of davenports injury?

I think the kid isn’t on the hot seat yet. He’s uber talented and has shown he can play in this league. He’s just dealt with some injuries like Sheldon Rankins who is also uber talented. Maybe both never reach their true potential due to the injury bug, but I think it’s too early to say with either of them.

Let him heal fully, let him mature. He came in as a raw player from a small school.

The hot seat narrative is fraudulent.

Just read this on the CBS Sports App by Jared Dubin. Don’t know how to link from an app, but I guess you could find it on the website. So I just copied & pasted the whole thing in here.

Saints D-line coach says Marcus Davenport 'definitely has room to get better' even after strong second season
By Jared Dubin

In 2017, the New Orleans Saints came extremely close to taking a trip to the NFC title game, losing to the Minnesota Vikings on a last-second miracle pass from Case Keenum to Stefon Diggs. A few months later, the Saints traded two first-round picks to move up and select University of Texas-San Antonio pass rusher Marcus Davenport with the No. 14 overall pick, hoping that his dynamism on the edge would help push the team over the top.

Davenport struggled a bit with injuries during what was still a solid rookie season, but played only 51 snaps in New Orleans' two playoff games, the second of which was another heartbreaking loss, this time to the Los Angeles Rams. Davenport came back healthy for his second season and took a nice step forward, starting all 13 games in which he appeared and picking up six sacks, five tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, and 16 quarterback hits. He got injured again down the stretch, though, and didn't appear in New Orleans' playoff loss to (again) the Vikings.

“He definitely has room to get better and it's there, the potential and the growth is there," defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen said, per The Times-Picayune. "I think he made a big step last season. There's some games where he was playing lights-out. Talking to him, I think his confidence is better this offseason. He's working hard and I know he had a couple of injuries, but he's put the work in."

If his overall production is any indication, Davenport is already among the most efficient edge rushers in the league, even with a relatively moderate sack total. He ranked 15th out of 93 edge rushers who played at least 25 snaps per game last season in my Weighted Overall Win Rating (WOW Rtg) metric, which adjusts a player's sack, hit, hurry, and run stop totals (via Pro Football Focus) to gauge how much more often than the league average player they produce one of those results.

Davenport's WOW Rtg of 125.9 in 2019 was on par with players like Calais Campbell, T.J. Watt, and Von Miller, and indicates that he was 25.9 percent more likely than the average edge rusher to produce a sack, hit, hurry, or run stop on any given snap.

RANK PLAYER TEAM WOW RTG
1 Za'Darius Smith Packers 139.6
2 Nick Bosa 49ers 138.0
3 Joey Bosa Chargers 133.4
4 Matthew Judon Ravens 133.4
5 J.J. Watt Texans 132.1
6 Trey Flowers Lions 131.7
7 Danielle Hunter Vikings 131.6
8 Justin Houston Colts 131.4
9 Shaquil Barrett Buccaneers 130.5
10 Adrian Clayborn Falcons 130.0
11 Brandon Graham Eagles 129.8
12 Von Miller Broncos 128.6
13 Marcus Davenport Saints 125.9
14 T.J. Watt Steelers 124.9
15 Calais Campbell Jaguars 124.6
16 Shaq Lawson Bills 121.2
17 Myles Garrett Browns 121.0
18 Cameron Jordan Saints 120.3
19 Demarcus Lawrence Cowboys 120.1
20 Arik Armstead 49ers 117.3
21 Melvin Ingram III Chargers 116.7
22 Lorenzo Alexander Bills 115.4
23 Kyle Van Noy Patriots 114.7
24 Jadeveon Clowney Seahawks 114.0
25 Khalil Mack Bears 113.9

If he can take on something closer to a full-time role after playing 40 and 50 percent of defensive snaps in his first two seasons, then Davenport will be more likely to live up to the high expectations the team apparently has for him. And if he can take that step, the Saints would suddenly have one of the best edge duos in the league, as teammate Cameron Jordan is on the above list as well.
