I am a born and raised Saints fan and would love nothing more than to see Drew Brees compete for the Super Bowl this 2020 season, but working with these COVID patients the last few months, it is likely not an illness 32, 100 + personnel teams can isolate from. and despite the conditioning of NFL athletes, it is an especially unsafe illness given the increased risks to the O.line and D.lineman with their size and comorbidities.
I saw the NFLPA already voted unanimously for No preseason, and even if we get to see 3-4 weeks of football, I cannot imagine the players will continue once teammates are hospitalized.
perhaps some deus ex machina will arrive this Fall and change that, and l would love nothing more both as a physician and a fan; however, I am not hopeful for 2020.
I don’t know if our HOF quarterback would push onward for 2021, but does anyone know if existing contracts would roll over?
i.e. is the Winston signing valid for 2021 if we don’t play any games this season?
I believe with the “guaranteed” contracts common for NFL players, should the league play a few games and then cancel, all the money would be owed to the players; therefore, I doubt we will see any games this Fall, but additional insight here would be appreciated.

I’m sure that the NFL and the NFLPA are discussing that scenario and what would happen to the players’ contracts, but I don’t think that any of that info has been leaked.

A 21-year old student at Penn State recently died from this, and apparently kids in Alabama are throwing Covid parties. I just don't know how college of pro ball can navigate this climate. Link to the Alabama parties:

Since you’re a physician I’ll ask you this as it’s something I’ve been wondering about.

If there is no season this year and Drew decides to come back in 2021- what would over a full year of rest from games plus the right kind of training do for his arm? Could he theoretically gain some stamina? Would his arm just continue to get weaker since he’s still battling age, regardless of how he trains? I assume it’s probably the latter, but I’ve wanted to hear this answered by a med person or someone who understands the human body better than I do.

NFL will never cancel. Too many parties involved and too much money to make
This is true. I think they are going to try their best to start but a full season is going to extremely difficult to pull off.

0% chance Drew retires if we don’t play or don’t finish a season. Literally 0%
It might be unlikely, but there is a 0% chance of there being 0% chance of anything. He's almost ready to retire and move on. Will he put life on hold for another year? We all wish him to stay but it may be wishful thinking. Personally, I think it is 60% that he would not return, but I would hope to be wrong.

To answer the OP, there is a reason Winston is here on a 1-year contract. It's a repeat of the Bridgewater situation, which turned out to be very smart. He was never to be the post-Brees answer, and that is a good thing.

This virus is frightening. And any positive is absolutely a concern. So this post is NOT downplaying that at all.

With that said, sports are moving forward. I don’t know if it’s the right decision. And there’s certainly a chance they have to change course if something awful happens with one or more players.

But NFL training camps are going to open in 23 days. MLS is going to play on Wednesday and baseball will start in 2 1/2 weeks and NBA a week later.

Again, I’m not saying it’s right or wrong. But major professional leagues have a huge amount of $ to spend on precautions and protocols and similar financial motivation to make it work.

It is a different decision for different people. It may be like a strike year. Those who want to play should play. If Brees wants to play he should play. If Malcolm Jenkins wants to sit out, we'll get another free safety who is hungry to play in the NFL. If the referees, cheerleaders, ball boys, or luggage guys do not want to participate, others will. There are people who will pay a lot of money for football to happen so it should happen.

Dude he'll be 42 years old at the start of the 21 season. To suggest a 0% chance he retires is completely laughable. He may stay, he may not, but his body is going to start deteriorating quickly and the odds of him not feeling able to perform at his top level anymore are definitely there. I dont see drew as the type of player who is going to try to play when he cant play at an elite level anymore and father time is going to come knocking soon. I hope he miraculously ceases to age, but the end is near.
