Isn’t 49/50 98%? I am hoping he is the starting guard this year.

By all accounts he will be playing C with McCoy moving over to G....

I have a friend who is a huge MI fan and watches all the Big 10 teams religiously. So far he is batting 1000 as he said Zach Streif would be a quality starter for us at T one day (this was days after the 2006 draft) and that Ram would be the best RT in the NFL in a few years (also days after we drafted him).....He thinks Ruiz will be the best C in the NFL, day one....

Sure he is biased towards MI players but I'm not going to doubt him....

One issue in this situation of less offseason work is the switch of McCoy to RG. He adjusted to the NFL very quickly. I wonder if they will change their minds and leave McCoy at C and start Ruiz at RG. Long term, it would be better for Ruiz to be the C, of course, because he would have only one adjustment to make, i.e. adapting to the NFL.

I think they absolutely should leave McCoy at center this season under the circumstances. I'm concerned about so little time for Ruiz to get ready. Guard should be easier for him to step into than center. Actually this has me wondering if we should be Warford back. I think he's still available.

Guard isn't easier. Guards are usually lead interior rush blockers, pull leads, identify delayed/ gap blitz, and they usually match up with pass rushing interiors. There is nothing easier about playing Guard.

I guess we'll see what position he plays this year.

Other than pulling (which they do just not as much), Centers do all of those same things.

I think what he meant was Centers are typically the ones who make the blocking adjustment calls. With the shortened off-season and pre-season to learn from, it would be better to leave McCoy there since he already has experience and the knowledge of the offense. Not to mention chemistry with Drew on snaps.

Except guards in this offense with Brees are the point of attack on shutting down Brees's vision and passing windows. A rookie is a no go at guard. We can hide a rookie center better than a rookie guard.

On top of that, Brees usually make protection calls and adjustments at the line. The

Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks, and Andrus Peat all started at guard as rookies. If Ruiz starts this season, it'll be at guard.

I'll throw in a couple of quotes from Max Unger yesterday:

On McCoy:

"The guy came in, I think he started every game, right? At center, that's hard to do especially in this offense and Drew (Brees) coming into the huddle and calling the plays at about 100 miles an hour."

On the offense:

"The speed and the familiarity in which people who have been in the system have with it and the complexity of it is challenging. I think I came in, when I got traded, it was my eighth year I think. I played a lot of football, but it was a pretty good learning curve, just the speed of which you are expected to grasp it and hear the play call and digest all that information and get the line and make the calls. It's hard."

I think there are 8 cornerstones (to our octagon, I guess): Brees, CGM, Ram, Cam, and DD, then Kamara, Lattimore, Armstead.

Then 8 who are solid starters: McCoy, MJ, Rankins (would be up if not for injury ?), CGJ, JJ, MW, Morestead & Lutz.

Jared Cook and Sanders could be in that group, but I'm guessing one of those two were edged out by Ruiz, which is a bold prediction. I like it.
