ZACH WOOD

Wood went to Rowlett High School in Texas. He played defensive tackle and in his last two seasons there he totaled 214 tackles, and 18 sacks. He was an honorable-mention selection in Class 4A All-State as a defensive lineman. Wood accepted a football scholarship from Southern Methodist University. He was red-shirted his first year there and began to see the field the following year. As a red-shirt sophomore he started all 12 games as a defensive end in a 3-4 defense and he spent time as the long snapper. He eventually became a team captain. He finished his college career with 33-of-43 starts, 137 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 3 blocked kicks. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in applied physiology. Wood was signed as a free agent by the Saints prior to the 2017 season opener after spending parts of 2016 and 2017 competing for snapping duties with the Dallas Cowboys. Wood snapped for all punts and placekicks in all 16 regular season games and both postseason contests in 2019 and has provided consistency since his arrival. He recently signed with the SAINTS on a new four-year contract. He received the lowest rating of any NFL player in the video game MADDEN. Watch the short clip at the end of the pictures as he shows his accuracy and proper response to that rating as hit knocks the game out of a teammates hand.

There is another video where the quarterback throw at MADDEN games as someone throws them up like when skeet shooting. It was one of their quarterback challenges. Zach joins the quarterbacks and nails it after someone tosses it in the air.

Juantavius Tavon "J. T." Gray

Gray was born in the Mississippi Delta in Clarksdale. He played football in his junior year of high school in Coolidge Arizona. As a junior, he had 60 carries for 914 yards and 15 scores while catching ten passes for 117 yards and a TD. He also played defense and he lead his team with 112 tackles and two interceptions. He was on the track team at Coolidge and qualified for the state meet in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter run, high jump and long jump. He went back to Mississippi for his senior year and played at Clarksdale High school. Once again he played on both offense and defense where he recorded 58 tackles on defense and rushed for 939 yards and 16 scores on offense. He played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic. Gray played college for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. He played at both safety and outside linebacker. He played in 45 games with 17 starts from 2014-17 and he made 210 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, four sacks. The SAINTS signed Gray as an undrafted free agent after the draft. Many of us, including me, were surprised when he made the 53 man roster and the SAINTS had to cut draft picks Karmin Moore and Boston Scott. He played in five games, primarily playing on special teams, before being waived, but he was resigned to the practice squad. He was brought back to compete for a spot in 2019. Once again he made the team and last year he played in all 16 games as a core special-teamer. He tied for the league-lead with 16 special teams tackles and was named second-team All-Pro as a special teamer. I’m pretty sure I didn’t hear Scott or Moore make any All-Pro teams, or lead any NFL statistics at their positions.

ALEX ANZALONE

Anzalone was born and raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. He played both offense and defense for his local high school. As a junior, he was named first-team All-County, All-Region, and All-State when he ran for over 900 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. In his senior year his high school won its first Class AA state championship finishing 16-0. That year, Anzalone rushed for over a 1000 yards with 30 touchdowns, and he made over 100 tackles which earned him a spot on the 247Sports Class of 2013 All-American team. He was named as the Class AA Player of the Year in Pennsylvania and he was also selected to the Under Armour All-American game. After that Alex headed to play football for the Florida Gators. He played in 10 games as a freshman and played in all 12 games the following year as a backup linebacker and on special teams. His junior year was cut short with a season-ending shoulder injury. As a senior he made 53 tackles which ranked third on the Gator’s defense and he accomplished that in only 8 games before he suffered a broken forearm that ended his season. All together at Florida he totaled 3 sacks, 75 tackles, and a fumble recovery in 32 games. In the 2017 NFL draft the SAINTS selected Alex in the third round. In his rookie year he started 4 games before he suffered another shoulder injury and being placed on injury reserve. In 2018 he played in all 16 regular season games with seven starts and appeared in both playoff games. He finished the year with 59 tackles (45 solo), two sacks, an interception, and three forced fumbles. Last year Anzalone's season was cut short again due to another shoulder injury. He played in two games recording seven solo tackles and one sack before going to IR. In his three years with the SAINTS he has appeared in 22 games and he has made 82 tackles (63 solo), four sacks, one interception, three passes defensed and three forced fumbles. Anzalone is a multi-position linebacker and many say when he is in the field, the SAINTS are a different defense. Take care of that shoulder, Mr. Anzalone.

JOE BACHIE

Bachie participated in multiple sports at Berea-Midpark High school in Berea, Ohio. In football he played on both sides of the ball. As a senior, he led his team in tackles on defense with (89), (14) for a loss, (2) forced fumbles and (3) fumble recoveries. On offense he had 304 yards in receptions, 236 yards rushing, and (17) touchdowns. He was named to the AP Division I All-Ohio first team. He was ranked among the nation’s top inside linebackers by Rival.com and 247Sports. He also lettered in basketball and baseball in high school, earning in both sports all-conference honors. Bachie went to Michigan State and in his freshman year he played defense in the final six games, had (12) tackles, with (2) of them being for a loss. In his second year, he became the first Michigan State sophomore to record 100 tackles in a single season. As a junior, he started all 13 games and led his team in tackles with (102). Bachie earned first-team All-Big Ten honors from conference coaches and ESPN and was named his team's most outstanding defensive player. In 2019, he was named a semi-finalist for the Butkus award. His season was cut short due to a suspension, but he finished the year with (71) tackles, (3.5) sacks in eight games. In his four years at Michigan State, he started for three of them and was a two-time team captain. He had (34) starts in (40) games, (285 )tackles, (27) for a loss, and (5) interceptions. He graduated in December. Bachie was considered a late round pick entering the draft. He is known as a run stopping sure tackler, but also has had difficulty covering running backs in coverage. USA Sports wrote, “he is a smart player and a great tackler, but he was critiqued by analysts for a lack of on-field speed and for his perceived lack of ability to shed blocks and disrupt plays.” He went undrafted but that didn’t keep the SAINTS from signing him quickly as an undrafted free agent. In fact, the SAINTS wanted him to come to New Orleans so badly, Bachie received $160,000 in guarantees, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid college free agents. Only (2) players in last year’s class receive over 100K in guarantees. Bachie received the highest amount followed by fellow SAINT, Calvin Throckmorton the versatile offensive lineman from Oregon.

GARRETT GRIFFIN

Griffin went to Louisburg High school in Louisburg, Kansas. He was coached by his father there and was a member of the 2010 4A Kansas state championship team. He earned all-league honors all four years and all-state his final two seasons. He was also the state champion in javelin twice. Garrett played his college football at Air Force. He appeared in 44 career games, lettering four seasons and he finished with 41 receptions for 678 yards (16.5 avg.) with eight touchdowns. He also lettered on track team and was named All-Mountain West in the javelin. After his college career, Griffin was signed by the SAINTS as an undrafted free agent. He has spent the majority of his first three seasons on the Saints practice squad. The last two years he has been brought up to the active roster towards the end of the season. Griffin posted his first career receiving touchdown in the NFC Championship game against the Rams in January of 2019.

TAQUAN “SMOKE” MIZZELL Sr.

Mizzell attended and played high school football ay Bayside High in Virginia Beach, Virginia. After his high school playing days were over, Mizzell attended University of Virginia, where he played running back. He is the only player in ACC history with 1,500+ career rushing and 1,500+ career receiving yards. He played in 46 games in his four years at Virginia, and he started in 22 of them. He ranks #2 all time at Virginia with 195 receptions, the most ever by an ACC running back. He had at least (1) catch in his last 45 games in college. As a senior he rushed for 844 yards, and 5 touchdowns. In the passing game he had 52 receptions for 404 yards and added another 2 touchdowns. Mizzell graduated with an anthropology degree. In 2017 he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Ravens. He was waived by Baltimore at the beginning of the season but was picked up by Chicago and he played in 12 games over the next two years. He played running back for the Bears and he returned kickoffs. At the end of camp last year, he was waived by the Bears and that is when the SAINTS signed him to our practice squad where he remained all season. At the beginning of the 2019 season Mizzell switch from running back to wide receiver. Mizzell is another versatile position player Payton is seeing what he can contribute to this team. I'll go out on a limb here and say, if he makes the team, he won't be wearing #44 this season.

CHASE HANSEN

Hansen is another player from Utah trying to make the SAINTS roster. Football is well entrenced in Chase’s family.. His father, Brian played football at BYU, his uncle Randy played for Utah, his uncle Bruce lettered in football at BYU and played for the New England Patriots. Chase played football at Lone Peak high school in Highland, Utah. In 2011 he was a parade All-American and selected by the Salt Lake tribune as the Class 5A Player of the Year. He was named “Mr. Football” a state recognition given by the Desert news, and he was named as the Utah Gatorade Player of the Year. As a senior he quarterbacked his team to a 14-0 record and the Utah Class 5 state championship. He also played on the basketball team where he received four letters and he played on the 2011 state championship basketball team. He played a little baseball as well in high school. He was an academic all-region selection too. When his high school days were over Chase went to the University of Utah. As a redshirt freshman he played some quarterback. He went on to being a four-year starter at safety and linebacker. Before his time was done at Utah he had finished his college career with 272 tackles, 33.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, six interceptions, five fumble recoveries, and four forced fumbles. He was also a two-time All-Pac-12 selection (first-team linebacker in 2018 and 2016 honorable mention safety) He graduated with a bachelor's degree in consumer and community studies. As an undrafted free agent, the SAINTS signed Hansen to a three year contract in early May of 2019, but was surprisingly waived a few days later, and then re-signed again. This was all do to the fact they discovered Chase had not recovered well enough from a back surgery he had after an injury in his last game at Utah. When the SAINTS determined he was not ready to suit up for rookie mini-camp, they waived him to create a roster spot for another player they wanted to sign. After he was signed a second time, Hansen was eventually placed on injured reserve for all of 2019. Now with enough recovery time, Chase can show if he has what it takes to stick with the SAINTS.

ALVIN KAMARA

Kamara attended Norcross High school in Georgia. As a junior in 2011, he gained 1,300 yards rushing with (17) touchdowns. In his senior year, he picked up (2,264) yards with (26) touchdowns, and he had (22) receptions for (286) yards and another (5) touchdowns. He led his high school to its first state championship. Kamara was named Georgia Mr. Football by the press. He was also named Class 6A Player of the Year, and earned first-team All-State honors. Kamara was selected to participate in the Under Armour All-American game. Kamara was considered to be one of the top running back prospects in the nation. He was rated the No. 1 all-purpose back in the 247Composite. Kamara committed to play college football for the Crimson Tide, but his time there didn’t last too long. He had surgery on his knee in the preseason and he was red-shirted his freshman year. His recruitment class included future NFL running backs, Derrick Henry, TJ Yeldon, and Kenyan Drake. Kamara eventually left Alabama and went to Hutchinson Community college in Kansas. He had (1,469) total offensive yards and (21) touchdowns in his redshirt freshman year and that made him one of the top JUCO prospects in the nation. He received offers from Georgia and Tennessee and he decided to become a Volunteer. As a sophomore he shared the backfield duties with two other running backs and he contributed (698) yards & (7) rushing touchdowns, with an average of 6.5 yards per carry. He also had (291) receiving yards and (3) touchdowns, and he had a touchdown as a punt returner. His junior year was similar as he continued to share the backfield with Jalen Hurd. and John Kelly. Overall during his two years at Tennessee he played in (24) games, with (8) starts and contributed almost 2000 yards from scrimmage. Kamara decided to forgo his senior year and enter the NFL draft in 2017. He made the highest score on the Wonderlic test of all the running backs at the combine. NFL draft analyst had him ranked between the 4th and 7th best running back in the draft, and most had him rated as a second round pick. When the SAINTS saw him not picked yet in the third round, they moved up to select him. Leonard Fournette, Christian McCaffrey, Curtis Samuel (considered a RB/WR), Delvin Cook, and Joe Mixon were all selected ahead of him. He immediately gave us a new offense when he joined the SAINTS. Sean Payton saw this and eventually said, I am the only thing holding him back from becoming the offensive rookie of the year. Payton did not prevent that from happening and neither did Alvin. Over the last three years he has thrilled SAINTS fans and created an impressive highlight reel. In regular season games, he has (2,409) yards rushing, (2,068) yards receiving, 588 return yards. He has made (38) touchdowns including a (106) yard kickoff return for TD.

TINO ELLIS

Ellis played high school football for DeMatha Catholic High in Hyattsville, Maryland. He played as a freshman in high school and he helped lead his team to three straight Washington Catholic Area Conference titles. Ellis was selected as an Under Armour All-American and considered a four star recruit. He was also named DeMartha Catholic high school Distinguished Gentleman award winner. Ellis was rated the 6th best player in the state of Maryland by Rivals. He stayed in state and played his college football at the University of Maryland. He converted from playing wide receiver to cornerback his freshman year and that got him on the field contributing early. In year one in college he appeared in 12 games and he even had one start. The next year he had 6 starts and his playing time increased, and he was a full time starter in his junior year. His playing time as a senior was reduced due to a torn pectoral muscle injury. He only played in (4) games which some say prevented him from rising in the draft. He finished his college career playing in 42 games with 25 starts and recording 71 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 22 passes defensed, a fumble recovery and a 44-yard interception return. He went undrafted in the 2020 draft, and was signed by the SAINTS. He is considered a physical outside corner. He will be pushing to take a roster spot from one of the veteran backups. As he goes to the next level in his football career, can he once again be a contributed early like he did in high school and college?
