Federal Unemployment set to expire July 31? (3 Viewers)

sounds like they just don't want folks making more than they were before.

Precisely.

Even though what folks were making before in many, many cases- were poverty wages... Typical.

There’s no chance they will acknowledge that, though- because then they would be admitting that certain Presidential candidates in the past (not naming names so as to not stir up too much ****) were right about there needing to be a $15 national minimum wage .. and we cant be admitting to such truths, now can we?

As literature mentioned above, what you’ve laid out here makes a ton of sense.. but, even though it’s not *that* complicated- it’s still too complicated for 50 different states to put into action in a timely manner without everything getting messed up and a ton of people getting left out in the cold.. again, the operative word needs to be simplicity, even over fairness.. because what’s fair just wont be feasible at this time.
What I’m laying out is $250 flat amount nationally. It’s no different than the current $600. The complicated part is the justification.

The original $600 was basically 70% median income. The new amount just subtracts the national average state UI to get $250.

Folks. The government needs to extend this till November at least. I’m afraid America will go to a very dark place if we do not. The Economists all agree it needs to be extended. I’m not going to get political on this board but if we don’t help those that are still in need it is going to get really bad. High crime, riots, more protests, even a major stock market crash could happen. Pray Congress does the right thing and extends unemployment.

I agree it needs to be extended, but reformed. We have people here that don't want to return to work because they are making $800 a week when they were making $600 before. I know a few people personally that won't go back to making $1k plus a week because they can live on $800 a week and stay home.

I'm not doing it for the reasons you think though.

My point is simply that we are having to do more stimulus, more unemployment, more FED purchases and when I say more, I mean on magnitudes more than the rest of the world.

My point is simply we are stuck between a rock and a hard place because we ignored the virus. Literally pretended it didn't exist. Our leaders didn't even try to use the 2 months lead time they got from intel. Then our POTUS started tweeting out LIBERATE states. The White House launced a massive social media bot campaign with propaganda to open up. We continue to ignore the advice of experts and we're about to make the same mistake all over again and send kids to school. We aren't talking about needing 1-2 more months of unemployment payments, we're talking about needing 8-12 more months and that just gets us through the virus.

As a result of this we are putting the dollar at risk, we are putting our financial future at risk. We are putting our children's and grandchildren's future at risk. All of this because 2 more weeks, masks and honesty were just too much to ask.

Let's say the stock market wakes up in a few more weeks and suddenly realizes that the economy is in really, really big trouble and the markets collapse again. I mean, if you look at the data it says the markets should be down about 30%. What happens if we sink into a deep recession or depression? What firepower do we have left? How much more will it take before institutions start cashing in bonds, exchanging dollars for Euros or gold or Yuan and the dollar makes this drastic slide?

What happens if North Korea, China, Iran or any other hostile country decides they want to exploit this weakness and start a war? What happens if one of these countries see just how horribly we have handled the virus and decide to hit us with an engineered virus? What happens if we have a historic drought through the central plains or one of the super earthquakes that we are overdue for hits Seattle and produces a massive tsumani doing along the Washington and Hawaii coasts doing trillion in damages? What about a huge category 5 Hurricane hitting the East coast? One of the Cascade volcanoes having a mega eruption that we are also due for? What about a combination of both? The most likely threat, China escalating a cold war with the US causing a spending spree when we don't have the capability to match? Maybe a series of terrorist attacks in major cities? What if we have a non-peaceful election? Almost all of these things have happened before and will happen again. It's possible that two happen in the same year. My point is this, by not taking this virus seriously, we have jeopardized our country in so many ways.

Not trying to be all dark but we have to realize what the hell is going on. We have to realize what we will need to do on the backside of Covid moving forward to put ourselves back in a respectable place and NOBODY wants to even talk about it. We are simply ignoring history that says we are headed down a road that ends with a cliff over a raging river.
For people starting college to those about graduate these are going to be tough times for them. When I was in College I had to work a full time job to make ends meet and to not live the Ramen noodle lifestyle. Those who are in the situation I was in where family can't provide money might have to drop out of college or suffer badly.

For those who are about to enter the job market what a tough mountain to climb. Trying to get your life established, dealing with a pandemic and securing stable employment. As a veteran these people who can get through this have my upmost respect. It's a way bumpier road than I ever faced.

I mean we're also in an uncontrolled Pandemic. I don't blame people for not wanting to go back to work where they're either risking their life or crippling medical debt.

I think that the people you know are outliers.

There have always been, and always will be, a certain small percentage of the population who takes advantage of every single assistance program.. but for the VAST majority of Americans, they would rather be at work making a decent wage and feeling productive, than sitting home in a pandemic while collecting freaking unemployment, even if it is higher than the usual amount.

What is not being said in this discussion is the deep cuts in wages companies have instituted to the point of not making sense to work the job.

I work IT... took a pay cut... benefits cut... no PTO accrual... etc. I work with people daily, though I try and remote as much as possible. Would it be OK if I can live off the unemployment instead of working because I don't want to get sick?

Yes.

Federal Emergency. Pandemic. You are asking to put my life in danger. Let me know when the numbers decrease then I return.

That's a fine take, but what happens when your money runs out? What happens when no one wants to work anymore? The same places that are providing your food, services, etc? Genuine question.
