N/S If we are using MLB as a test (Cluster of cases puts Marlins' season on hold) (1 Viewer)

Its not a good look, that's for sure. I'm definitely leaning towards no NFL this year at this point. The NBA seems to be doing a good enough job, but they also have 22 teams basically incarcerated inside a small area of 1 city for a shortened period of time. NBA rosters are MUCH smaller than NFL rosters as well (53 to 15). NBA logistics are far less complicated than NFL logistics. Its not feasible to play entire professional sports seasons in a bubble. The way the numbers are heading and calls from medical experts to shut down again - even if we don't shut down - just seems like the NFL just will either have to delay the season till 21, or just call it a day.

I think Brees will play if they move this season back to early 21. But if the season is tossed altogether, does he stick around for the regular 21 season? How will player contracts work if theres no season, ie, will FA after the 20 season lose a year of credit and stay under contract until 21? Theres a ton of questions about salary cap, contract timelines, etc that have to be worked out. Its a strange time to be living in.

My gut reaction last night when I heard that some Marlins players had tested positive was, yeah, that's a wrap on sports in 20. We will see.

The Cluster Problem.

It's the biggest threat to any organization going forward, whether it be a sports franchise, a business, or schools that are about to re-open. Isolated cases acquired from outside of the organization are manageable.

A cluster within requires shutting down. Possibly for weeks or longer. I know that in Nascar's Covid plans, they regularly remind the whole community that a cluster can shut it all down (urging employees to be ultra-careful in their personal lives as well).

Just playing devils advocate for a second. MLB has 10x the travel.

But seriously, this’ll show how the protocols work.

Should they go to a 10 game bubble plus playoffs? NFL can only play 1 game a week due to how brutal it is. You can’t expect players to leave there life for 4-5 months.

This is either just going to slowly fade to nothing or it will just go out at once. That line from High Fidelity "is it better to burn out, or fade away". First we had no offseason workouts. Then we had no preseason. If I were a bettin man, Id say the next step is no out of conference games. Then no out of division games. So youll play 6 games. Only the 4 division winners with some crazy tie breakers in playoffs with no bye, skipping the WC round.

Right now, I just cant see NFL in 2020. I think a 6 game season is possible. Youd have the SB teams playing a total of 9 games. Its similar to the cut down MLB did, 162 to 60 - but we see how that's working out.

Sheesh.

I believe it came out last week that if no games get played, the contracts toll. Same for a player that opts-out.

If ANY games get played though, even if just one weeks, the players get an accredited season and the contract does not toll.

Exponentiality.

The Phillies and their family members have now been exposed.

How many hotel, transportation, and food service employees and their families have been exposed?

The rich sports leagues will get rapid test results but the working class will have to wait 1-2 weeks for their results - and probably pay hundreds of dollars for the test.

And yet the Phillies were by far the more sickening team. They loaded the bases three times resulting in 9 men left on base. :covri:

Everyone knew when the Marlins' starting pitcher was suddenly scratched that there was a problem. It's very sad that so many tested positive.

This may be the end of baseball for 2020 and the cancellation of the NFL season. Baseball and football require large rosters, a lot of equipment, large coaching staffs, and other personnel. It's not like basketball with only 12 players. It doesn't take any mathematical or gambling skills to figure out the relative odds of transmitting the disease. :(

Both Nirvana and before them, Def Lepard, would like a word about that saying;)
