So, first, I was replying to this comment:

Drew should keep something moist on him to wet his fingers with, rather than his own saliva.

Now, merely getting something wet doesn't make things sticky. On the contrary, generally speaking, merely making something wet makes it more slippery. Absent of foreign substances, which are against NFL rules, the chemical consistency of saliva makes a lick to the fingertips it more sticky than wiping your fingertips with a wet towel or rubbing sweat off.
