I'm thankful our school district has a public Dashboard where all Covid infections are listed per school, per students, per teachers, per admin, including janitorial, bus drivers, support staff and the administrations itself.

The teacher my wife shares a classroom with, meaning they swap rooms instead of the students, had a Covid test yesterday. She's feeling awful with loss of taste, headache, fever and fatigue. This may be hitting close to home soon.

how does that work with hippa compliance?

Oh, I assumed when he was saying ‘per students’ et al that they were named
Yeah it just gives counts. Like "Lab+ students, Lab+ staff, Lab+ stay-at-home students", etc. It's the same 5-6 metrics for every school in the district.

So I had a dry cough and headache for most of the weekend. Didn’t feel right going in to work today. No fever, but some light fatigue and while I can still smell and taste, it seems a bit off. It could all be in my head though.

Our district has a partnership with a hospital system so I went ahead and got my brain swabbed this morning. 24-48 hours till I get results.

My favorite game to play in the mornings: “is it Covid or old age?”

I thought this article from Jacobin magazine was interesting. They discuss herd immunity and lockdowns with some professors of medicine from Harvard.
These 2 professors do not seem to be in favor of the lockdowns and some of the other actions of the state to combat COVID.

For the record Jacobin is considered a socialist magazine and I am sure I disagree with them on most issues.

I agree with a lot of their points. The current partial lock-down whack-a-mole strategy isn't effective, and you cant keep the planet locked down for any significant length of time. At some point (a while ago IMO) the strategy needs adjusting into how to live with it while minimizing deaths.

Watching various colleges try to simultaneously fight 1) human nature and 2) the virus is just painful.

I agree. The challenge is every path to a more balanced approach involves an expectation of responsible behavior from the population. That simply hasn't been happening and isn't going to happen because of the hyper-politicization of the virus.

I threw my hands up a while ago on trying to think through a solution. Our society isn't capable taking on big problems that require free people to act responsibly by choice anymore.

I don't disagree about our inability to come together as a society, but I have an interesting anecdote that tells me there really is no way to effectively stop transmission.

A colleague's child is a first year midshipmen at Annapolis. They all showed up early this summer and were locked away, tested, and could not leave. They did like a 4 week basic training and then transitioned to classes. At some point near the end of the basic training, this kid tested positive for corona. There were no positives going into it and they had not left the campus or knowingly interacted with any outsiders - it might have possibly been spread by a foodworker or weird asymptomatic case that did not become transmissible for a few weeks - who knows? The point is that if you can't keep it out of a locked down military campus with zero socialization happening you can't keep it out of anywhere.

Plan for it happening and do your best to keep at risk people safe IMO

I don't know all the details of that case, but the NBA has prevented transmission almost entirely. You can keep it out, but I don't believe society can function in the bubble you need to create to keep it out.

The key is for citizens to act responsibly to minimize spread. Wear masks, social distance, and limit gathering sizes. Businesses should require masks and take precautions seriously, but remain open. That way we limit the spread (we can't totally stop it), don't overwhelm our healthcare system, and minimize illness and fatalities. The problem is there's a large enough chunk of the population that isn't willing to take those simple steps that the government feels the need to be heavy-handed in restrictions making it even worse.

As is usually the case We the People are the real problem. The virus just exposes that.

Do you agree that we should focus more on people in age ranges where it is more likely to be fatal?
