I remember during the preseason of 2017, our defense looked amazing. We were aggressive, hard hitting and coming up with turnovers. When the regular season came, I don't know what the heck happened but we were the complete opposite.
It was rumored that Kenny Vaccaro gathered the defense, and then went to the coaches and told them to go back to what they were doing during the preseason.

I don't know how true that is, but if that's the case, them maybe MJ needs to have a talk with the defense and coaches to see what they can do.

I love the fact that they are aggressive, but if we are blitzing, we need to make sure that the QB is getting hit, instead of giving them time for a big play.

That third week of the season against the Carolina Panthers was something else. I remember begrudgingly tuning in thinking I was about to watch the Saints drop to 0-3 and to my surprise they ended up easily winning. That was the turning point. After that you could tell they were having fun and just looked confident. Saints need that bad now.

One huge factor during the bad start to 2017 was the notorious Devante Harris starting the season at CB instead of Lattimore. Never really got an explanation as to why that happened. Once Latt got most of the snaps, the 0-2 start turned into several wins in a row.

Hopefully all of this has changed the mindset of the team. We'll never know what was in thier mind. Are the past seasons lurking in thier mindset, thinking about the number one seed resulting in uptight play or maybe just thinking this team just has to just show up and win

Either way now the Saints just need to focus on things one opponent at a time. Figure out a game plan that best gives the team the best chance to win, execute and stick to it.

I did like that during the last game Drew and Sanders established a connection. Hopefully they can build on that next game. If Drew can do that along with Harris and TQS, this recieving core will be lethal once M.T comes back.

Green Bay's run & bootleg offense reminded me of the 49ers game last year. It seems like we just have no luck stopping that type of offense. I will say that our next few opponents do not run a offense like that, so that should play in our favor.

Wishful thinking. You can not use the past to predict the future. This 2020 Saints team is much different than the 2017 team. I am not optimistic now, and even felt in the preseason, that if there was 1-2 playoff teams NOT making it to the playoiffs again (as happens in most years) it would be the Vikings and Saints. Until now I am right

Please share
Why did you feel that we wouldn't make it before the season started?
Also (besides different players) how are the 2017 & 2020 Saints different?

Green Bay was going to be a tough game regardless. I fully expect us to take care of business with Detroit.

Yea we suck at defending bootlegs and misdirection offenses/plays. It's cause our defense is so aggressive that you can play that against us.

Don't forget the role of Ken Crawley in that turnaround.

Even though it's been awhile, but I remember the Rams in 2011 & 2013 doing the same thing and it kept our defense on its heels.

It wasn't Lattimore it was Crawley. Latt started from day 1.

I don’t see where the improvement on D will come from.

I think we are going to have to turn into the 2011 Saints offense to win games. We will need to put up 35+ points. We have the offense and special teams to make up for our defense.

It was Crawley that replaced Harris and word was that Harris looked better than Crawley in practice.
