Mountain Lion Soils Jogger's Shorts / Cougar on the Prowl for a Young Man (1 Viewer)

Not in my house (took me a sec). No, we had to move away from where we had stopped and were standing when he sprayed it.

We were actually backpacking up to this lake...

where is that exactly? My best friend is moving to Ft. Collins soon and plan on doing some of that next summer ( along with fishing so ill be asking about that too )

Idiot should have turned and ran the other way as soon as he saw the cub in the road instead of approaching it trying to catch it on video. He is extremely lucky.

Problem with that is if you run away a mountain lion will chase you. It's instinct is to chase things since they are an apex predator. Apparently the best advice is to do what he did, back away, stay big, don't bend over, and make a lot of noise.

His mistake was not immediately backing away when he saw the cub. Still, the momma might have chased him anyway if she came around the bend and saw him backing away. But, if you have your back turned to it, it will not end well.

I’ve fished/hiked and upland bird hunted for 45 years. I’ve encountered many black bears, one grizzly and a mountain lion (that had thankfully just taken down a antelope on the upper Ruby valley in MT). In all cases the animals, as soon as they were aware of my presence, took off in the other direction, maybe I’ve been lucky, but it supports the notion that animals rarely attack.

That said, thinking a gun is going to protect you is foolishness. Most folks aren’t going to hit a animal moving at 30-40mph, bear/cougar spray is much much more effective....

And there are multiple instances of folks hitting the animal with a bullet but not bringing it down, guess what happens next.....

It's not that you need to shoot them, the gun is just really loud and the sound can scare an animal off.

That was Kroenke Lake, near Buena Vista.

I also backpacked to Whitney Lake and Brady Lake near Redcliff this summer, and both were spectacular. Brady lake was a little bigger, and actually has a second lake right next to it (Sopris Lake), but it's easier to get to so there were more people. Whitney Lake was a straight up incline the whole way up, but it was spectacular once we got there, and just full of cutthroat trout.

Possibly but not likely. There are a number of folks who illegally carry in National Parks though....spray is legal, safer and more effective.....

Cutthroat I believe. My 16 year old caught one in our first five minutes, and then nothing the rest of the day.

we commonly refer to those as "suicide" or "kamikaze" trout....that trout you catch on your first cast.

Then NOTHING rest of day.

I really think the other fish put them up to taking the bait to see if he comes back. lol

Thank you kindly.

My father managed a campground in Copper Landing AK during the summer after he retired. Bears are especially dangerous.
Their heart beat is around 30 bpm. It takes a long time for them to bleed to death. They can easily kill a human even after being
mortally wounded.

I've seen multiple instance where someone just shoots a gun in the air and these same animals take off in the other direction.

It all depends on the individual animal, but I'd rather take my chances trying to startle it than turning and running, or trying to act big and scary. Some creatures just take that as a challenge. Especially the males.
