His potential is Aaron Rodgers dare I say Patrick Mahomes level good.

His worst is flat out unplayable.

So the question is how do we mitigate the turnovers out of his game ?

1. Run - We have the best back in the league , Murray is averaging more than most teams starters and is a freight train. Our offensive line is the best in the league and will be for years to come. That spells run the damn ball. Not science here , running the ball takes the pressure off of Jameis , nullifies the passrush , and makes those instances we do pass like on play action much more likely to be explosive plays. We will have guys running wide open. Easy pickings for Jameis. Make the game easy.

2. Scheme it out of him - Most of dudes picks come on poor situations. 3rd and forever , offensive line can't protect him , no real checkdowns in Bruce Arians hail mary offense. So continue throwing the ball to AK out of the backfield. Move the pocket , give him time to find an open guy rather than having him let go of a dart before a guy can get separation. The more time he gets , the better decisions he makes.

3. He improves - We can scheme all we want , what matters most is he develops. Understands coverage , anticipates releases , and instead of trying to win it all in one throw , lives to fight another down or drive.

We can't afford to let talent like his pass us by without trying to correct the mistakes. Because if we hit on Jameis Winston , New Orleans will reign a decade longer.

Young OL , Young Backs , Young Receivers , Young QB , all balling at an elite level is a dream to dream about.

I do t play much attention but it seems more of these incoming qbs have been doing fairly well

Not sure what JW price rag would be but if it’s high I’d go after a different FA or look. In the draft

Not sure I believe in the “Fix” philosophy

I think the question is whether, in a post-Brees era, Payton can create a scheme that minimizes the decision making issues Winston had in Arians' offense.

If I had to bet, I would say yes, particularly given the Saints' strengths at RB, OL, and increasingly, WR.

He's a gamble, Taysom is a gamble and a rookie is a gamble. All three could or could not be starter material. We have seen Jameis already for plenty of years. He lost his job because something needs to be fixed. I'm no QB guru to tell you what can and cannot be fixed. The other two QB options are unknowns to me.

Regardless of any path, we should invest in a draft pick. Taysom is already locked into a healthy sum. Jameis is a FA and we are strapped for cash.

If you put that together, I would say I'd love to have Jameis back. The more chances we have to find a true starter the better. At least someone to buy us time. I'm not paying him starter money though. He'd be paid as 1 of 3 rolls of the dice. I'm not losing a good starter at another position for that roll either.

Now that is said without knowing any internal workings. I'm simply basing that on a rookie and Taysom being unknowns and Jameis having a known past that has to change.

I mean- coaching could help. I'm the last person to think all of his problems can be "fixed", but in reality how much of it has to be corrected for him to become a net positive or an asset? My entire line of thinking on this has changed after seeing Ryan Tannehill's transformation in TEN. He was bad or a bench rider on multiple teams. Nobody, NOBODY, believed he would become what he has, but here we are.

As for his price tag- if he doesn't see the field this year why would it be much more than what it is now? If Teddy hadn't played last year, i could see him still being here.

Guy has a cannon for an arm...his decision making is what needs work. You can't teach arm strength but fortunately you can teach decision making. I'd like to see him tear it up here.

His decisions in the Bruce Arians offense:

Throw risky bomb option #1. If not open, progress to risky bomb option #2. If still not there, check down to insanely covered Hail-Mary route #3.

He executed that offense as well as anyone, but the problem wasn't the QB I don't think. But you are correct in that we can coach decision making, you can't coach the intangibles he has.

JW has all the physical tools every one wants in a QB. Strong Arm, mobile, big body to take hits. I've never met the Kid so I can't speak on his mental capacity. I do believe if anyone can help him improve in this area it's Payton and Drew. There is nothing wrong with the Offense we have been running for years and with Winston's arm strength the Offense could open back up with the deep passes again. It sucks that this year had to be the Covid-19, no offseason workouts, no pre-season games, where Winston could actually take real snaps. But Payton see's him in practice and has watched game film, so if he thinks Winston can take the reigns then I'm with him.

I can see Winston being a much better Aaron Brooks without the backwards passes.

Been saying that for a while. He has done better numbers than anyone in their first year in Arians system. Everyone ignores this but outside of last year, his numbers were similar to Drew's years in San Diego, but let some tell it, Drew was destined for the HOF when he first got here. lol. If anyone really looked into the Bucs team dynamic, they would know that:

*Their O-Line was the pits
*Their running game was trash
*Tight end play was sketchy
*Defense was garbage half the season
*Arian's offense is outdated

Yet, they still should have been a 10-6 team, even with the interceptions and even with Evans and Godwin hurt the last month of the season, on top of playing hurt a good portion of it.

Sometimes, I'm starting to believe that people don't know when a gift horse has fell into their lap and, either through preconceived notions, bias, lack of knowledge of the sport, ESPN hot take or "crab lehgz." We've had this happen twice in the last 3 years. We might want to take advantage of it this time. We will see what coach really thinks this offseason.

I assume that teams don’t have roster spots to waste on players, so I just think that the Saints’ leadership identified the positives in him and feel that he has value. I don’t know - he’s been very inconsistent in the league thus far - he’s played some good football, but also some pretty bad football.

The Tannehill comparison is a great one (even though they’re very different players).

Tannehill’s strengths were his arm (always threw a pretty deep ball, regardless of narratives otherwise) and his legs. He tended to struggle when he stood in the pocket too long.

So what did Tennessee do? Tons of play action, quick throws, one read and run. Their system fits the QB.

With Winston, its highly possible that coaches have tried to fit him into their system. Whereas Payton is more about building the system around the QB.

Getting him away from Bruce Arians was the first step in the right direction.

He plays out the rest of this season on the bench, and then he goes away... that’s my hope.

Why don't you tell us again how much you truly loathe Winston. I don't think people really caught on after the first couple of dozen times.
