Why is this a thing? It’s the second time I’ve personally seen it this season. The game I’m referring to is the Texans at Titans. My line of thinking is to kick the extra point so they have to go for two if they score.

Good call.

If you as a 1-4 team have an opportunity to get INSTANT WIN against 4-0 team, you try to get it.

You're 1-4 defense lol. You should try everything not to get in OT with 4-0 team.

And +2 point conversion was an instant win.

I really don't know how you can't understand it.

You DON'T play it safe at that point, jesus.

I understand your point...
I also think it’s dumb

It was a good decision but not a great play call. I have no doubt Titans would have picked up the two point conversion. Texans knew they were on the ropes and the best shot they had was going up by 9.

93.6% conversion rate vs 47.7% conversion rate. I’ll let you pick which one to go with
93.6% at one point or 47.7% at two. That's 0.936 expected points for the kick, or 0.954 for the conversion try. The two narrowly wins out.

Either you are going to go for two, or they will. If you go for two and win, you clinch the game. If you go for two and fail, you go to overtime if they score a TD. If you kick, they kick, and you go to overtime if they score a TD.

There's zero down side in going for two. Even if you fail, you're in the same shape you were before.
