Question for Catholics (Catholic Church Crisis) (1 Viewer)

guess i never thought of this before, but if a priest is not in 'active ministry' what are they doing?

Aymond said he immediately removed both Wattigny and Clark from active ministry, as he has done with other priests facing allegations of sexual abuse or scandal. But Wattigny and Clark are the first two alleged to have committed such violations during Aymond’s 11-year tenure as archbishop.

Retire, perform marriages/baptisms/funeral services and sometimes perform church services while the resident priest is away. Many volunteer time to various Catholic charities as well.

Teachers get married, some of them are pedophiles. Boy Scout Troop leaders can get married. Some of them are pedophiles. And on and on. Predators go where prey are.
Maybe your looking at it the wrong way. No, being married doesn't change the scope of bad behavior, but allowing priests to be married would attract better people to be priests that would otherwise not be allowed. Its like any situation, if your talent pool is larger, then you will get better talent.
Also, I know there are some female priests, but that is another way to shrink the pedophile percentage, to allow more female priests.
If you allow more women and allow Married people to be priests, the molestation rates would probably drop significantly.

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. For lack of a better way to say it, the rate of sexual abuses in the priesthood are about the same as the rate in the rest of the population, including married couples. Just opening it up to married individuals won't necessarily fix the sexual abuse problem in the Church. The Church needs to do more to get rid of the priests who commit abuses. I think people are as much if not more disturbed by the perceived lack of action in addressing and removing priests committing these terrible crimes.

I agree that it won't fix it. Obviously the best way to fix it is to hold them accountable for their actions and not cover it up, but i'm pretty confident that it will cut it down.

Married people are better than single people? I don't follow.

Catholic priests cannot be female, though. And I'm not sure it would reduce sexual abuse. I can think of several instances of female teachers who've had relations with minors.

you are taking what I said wrong.
I didn't say married people were better. I simply said allowing married priests opens it up to a wider array of people. allowing married and female priests opens it up 100% of the population instead of like 25% of the population.
I'm sure there are many men who would make great priests, who may want to become priests, but cannot because they are already married.
If allowing married wouldn't make a difference, why does the Catholic Church have this problem more than others?

The Catholic Church does have married priests. The Roman Rite doesn't allow for it, but there are plenty of married priests worldwide.

Your last statement demonstrates the problem. The Church doesn't have this problem more than others.

The church is slowly changing its ways?

I don't think this is a whole lot different than the previously held stance that "marriage" should only be a holy union between man & woman. The church will still not officially recognize their union. I've said all along that the government should quit the practice of recognizing "marriages" and just accept civil unions that are separately recognized. If you want to get married, you go to the church. If you want the government to recognize your union, you go to the courthouse. One does not equal the other.

not really changing their ways, but it is a good thing the Pope is saying some things that need to be said, like this and atheists can still go to heaven (not that the atheist cares).
I have no doubt once there is a new Pope, the new one will walk all that stuff back.
