Good article about something i was wondering about as we head into flu season

I do wonder if there will be some panic from people who think they have covid when they really have the flu
===========================================================

If all of the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 weren't enough to keep track of, once we head into the fall season, those symptoms could overlap with those of another contagious virus: Influenza.

Unfortunately, many flu symptoms can look very similar to the coronavirus, which can be downright confusing if you start to get sick. Thankfully, there is already a vaccine for the flu. Scientists are working on a vaccine for COVID-19 -- but it's not likely going to be available until early 2021.

As we head into the upcoming flu season in the midst of a pandemic, I consulted Dr. Nate Favini, medical lead at Forward to help shed some light on what you need to know about both viruses and what to do if you get sick.

"This is going to be a really challenging flu season because it's very difficult to tell the difference between COVID-19 and the flu based on symptoms alone. We don't have a great way of differentiating the two other than testing, and as we've seen over the last few weeks, our COVID-19 testing capacity in the US is currently a disaster," Dr. Favini said.

One the other hand, flu testing is available to most people and provides results quickly. The problem is if someone is sick and tests negative for the flu, you still need to know if they have COVID-19. "Rapid flu testing is widely available, but that won't be sufficient, because someone who is negative for flu could have COVID-19 or any other of a number respiratory illnesses that circulate in the fall and winter," Dr. Favini says. The CDC also says it's possible to have the flu and COVID-19 at the same time....................

That's our biggest concern going into winter from a business standpoint - the "is it flu or is it covid?" problem could lead to a lot of lost employee days that could be avoided. We're pushing flu shots harder than ever.

My company had people come to the office and give them for free for exactly that reason.

Supposedly, security was told to go get Turner off the field but Turner ignored them. For whatever reason, security chose not to remove Turner forcefully. Could you imagine if they would have forcefully removed him? Oh and commish wasn't drunk, it is a mic echo issue. It has happened many times. Listen to the one below. This guy doesn't drink at all.

Thanks 🙏🏻!! 👍⚾

Saw this article and thought it was interesting in regards to this topic.

instead of missed work days I was thinking more along the lines of the fear and panic if you wake up one day and you're really sick, "Oh my god, is it covid?!" even more so if you're in a high risk category

"Am I going to be in the hospital by the end of the week?!" , "Am I going to be dead a week after that?!"

Then you finally find out you have the flu. Until you find out for sure I'm sure some people will be nervous wrecks

Europe continues to look VERY grim. Germany and France will be starting new "lockdowns" next week. (Bars and restaurants have been open in many parts of both countries.)

Here are the latest numbers, I did a 7 day rolling average of new cases per day and these are then adjusted for population (new cases per day per million people) and a percentage of the USA number at the end. (rounded to closest whole number)

USA: 73,095 per day, 222/million
Germany: 9,276 per day, 112/million (51%)
(This is the first time that Germany has topped 50% on a seven day rolling average of new case vs the USA number.)
Italy: 18,607 per day, 310/million (140%)
The UK: 22,090 per day, 330/million (149%)
France: 38,279 per day, 571/million (257%)
Belgium: 12,239 per day, 1,064/million (479%)

(For reference, Belgium has about 11.5 million residents. Adjusted for population, the State of Louisiana is averaging about 200 new cases per day per million residents, about 10% UNDER the USA average.....and far below, Italy, France, the UK and Belgium. GO TEAM!)

Would really appreciate opinions on this case:

Justin Turner was pulled out of the last game of the World Series, because his Covid test came back positive. He left the dugout & went to the locker room. After the Dodgers won the World Series, the team, coaches, staff were all celebrating on the field. Men in grey suits were quickly handing out masks to all of the players, coaches etc. They all put their masks on, (the cheapy blue paper things), but soon enough the masks were 1/2 on, 1/2 off etc etc etc, because they were so excited & celebrating. Soon, the wives & small kids & babies on their hips, all joined the celebration. Justin Turner came back out for the group picture, & sitting right next to Dave Roberts, they both took their masks off! 😳
In his post game interview, Dave Roberts said, “but I did not touch him.” ???!!! Wut???
Clayton Kershaw was looking like the rest of us, at the podium, with his mask pulled to his chin, so that he could talk into the mic. The bands on his mask, pulled his ears down 1/2 way, so his ears were sticking out sideways. 🤣
Anyway.......imho it is going to be a MIRACLE, if 1/2 the group does not get infected. Also, to “set an example” the Dodgers will probably be heavily fined, or some other punitive something.
The commissioner was there, handing out trophies, but the poor guy was slurring his words, & seemed to have had a few too many beverages.
He was being interviewed by a guy with a mask on, but the commissioner did not have a mask on, & he kept getting in the guy’s face, & would only stay like 2-3 feet away?????

The whole thing just seemed like one big disaster.

Any thoughts???!!!
Thanks!

These are professional athletes and everyone is going to be fine even if they do get it. Turner probably had COVID while playing a few games already, and wouldn't be surprised if other players for the Dodgers had COVID while playing.

I realize I am beating a dead horse, but is there any chance these pro athletes ever hang around non-pro athletes especially the older ones with pre-existing conditions?

We should be staying home for the flu anyway
anerican labor has it so backwards

Bears repeating that we still don’t know the lingering (especially cardio vascular) effects
Elite athletes, who probably tax their heart on the regular, might actually be quite susceptible to long term effects

Had this one used on me today in a use of masks battle. I told him to put one on and spit then report back his findings haha

I agree but the time at home required for flu before you are no longer contagious is a lot shorter than COVID. It adds up, especially in critical infrastructure industries.

But basically its not good for anyone to get the flu or covid. Hence the push for getting the flu shot.

For the wearer it’s absolutely correct. For the drooling spittle flinging coworker it at least absorbs their debris.
