There weren't too many things to complain about in yesterday's plucking of the Dirty Birds. But if I had to remove anything from our gameplan, I'm pretty sure it would be those hopeless wildcat plays. Kamara is great, but it seems a bit too easy for a defense to key in on AK when he's taking a direct snap.

Maybe it's me, but I don't see much hope of that play having any reasonable amount of success in the future.
What say you?

I've heard AK would be the emergency qb if Taysom and Jameis both got hurt (God forbid). AK can spin the ball, though, so if you really want that play to work then you have him throw it to Taysom, who we know can catch the ball like a TE. Maybe Payton is setting something up for down the road?

That would make sense if they really plan on doing more with that play than just running AK left or right. There has to be some sort of option threat for that play to be worth calling.

This isn't necessarily a thing that didn't go right but the one thing that was missing was Taysom throwing his first TD of his career. I think once he can get that out of the way, his confidence to do it again will go up exponentially.

Payton is playing chess while Morris is stuck on checkers...

Exactly. Taysom makes it work, and he's not a better runner than Kamara. The difference has to be that defenses are at least giving Taysom's passing ability some respect. Kamara is less threatening as a passer, but even a little respect would help.

This is definitely setting something up... and that “something” will involve AK41 throwing the ball.
We may not see it until the Chiefs or Vikings game... or maybe not even until the playoffs, but it’s coming....

I think something to be a little worried about is Taysom arm strength on deep throws. Both long passes to Sanders was all him making something out of almost nothing.

Taysom had good velocity on his short and intermediate passes, so I think It might be more about technique than strength, but It was something that had me a little bit worried.

Taysom obviously has the arm to send the ball down the field. He does have to build the confidence that he can put the ball precisely where he wants without putting it up for grabs. I was happy to see Taysom go through his progressions and throwing to his second and third reads on occasions. A quarterback who is only looking for one player to throw to is doomed from the start.

When Taysom begins to trust that he can fit a football into the kind of tight windows that are often seen when you're throwing in the Red Zone, then he will really be ready for the big time! :9:

It's not arm strength (we can see that from his other passes that he doesn't lack in that department). It's the timing. He is throwing the ball way too late.

I saw it as a technique issue. He threw some of those longer passes like he was trying to drop in a tight pass over a pair of defenders. He just needs to throw the ball to the spot his receiver will be when the ball gets there. As long as his bombs are thrown over the shoulder where only his guy can get to it, it's a good pass. Because even the threat of a 60+ yard pass forces a defense to chase after the deep receiver. And having an open intermediate zone is where Mike Thomas really shines!

I don't know if they ran them and they weren't open but two plays that the saints normally run that I didn't see.
1. The Kamara option route out of the backfield against a LB. This is normally an easy completion.
2. The Kamara wheel route
